Hey,
Does anyone know if the floating lightbulb trick on hanklee.com is any good? I mean can you do a lot of the moves because it says no assistants needed. Can anyone give me some reviews? Thanks |

Better to dig up materials on Lewis Ganson or Blackstone and work it out yourself mate.

There is a booklet published on the Floating Lightbulb that give stage and one man versions. It is only a few dollars. Tannen used to publish it, but I think David Robbins (EZ Magic) does not produce the book. Abbott's carries it. Other dealers may or may not have the book.
I suggest you buy the book. I purchased the L&L Version and only got a cheap toy plastic bulb and a piece of wood ring. Abbott's make it out of a real light bulb. The gimmick is not as good as the original that they use to make, but bulbs no longer use brass bases so aluminum is not as good as brass to work with. I do not know what Hank Lee sells; you might email him and see if it is the plastic bulb. |

The booklet referred to above is by Burling Hull. Good investment!

I hope the one on Hank Lee's site is not a T.T. gimmick.

I could not find this effect on Hank Lee's site. So unless Streetmagician gives more info, no one will know.

On Hank Lee's index it is listed as "Floating Light Bulb." (Three words.) It is not a plastic bulb and doesn't require a T.T. If this is the same as I remember from years ago it is a globe style designer bulb, the kind you now find in most newer bathrooms.
Cheers!

Yes I searched on Hank's site, under floating, light, bulb, Fantastic. Any and all combinations do not bring up anything.
I remember that large designer bulb years ago. I doubt it is still around any longer. Stanyon, you sound so positive it is there; would you mind giving the page reference on Hank's site? |

I bought several years ago Burling Hull's Floating Light Bulb. It came with a 24-page booklet that outlined many moves from legendary performers such as Gen Grant, Fu Manchu, Mohammed Bey (Sam Horrowitz), and Burling Hull himself.
Two years ago, I also bought Kerry Summer's Floating Light Bulb which came with a single-sheet of instructions. Burling Hull's Light Bulb was made out of real light bulb (read: breakable), while Kerry Summer's was made of plastic. I'm not sure what the Hank Lee Light Bulb is made of, but if it's the plastic version, I would personally prefer it over the Burling Hull light bulb. Plastic light bulbs are lighter than the old glass light bulbs and can survive breakage of the gimmick. My Burling Hull bulb never made it to actual performance, because I broke it during rehearsals. Someone contemplating to buy the Floating Light Bulb will do well to make sure it comes with a sample gimmick and well-written instructions on various moves and handlings possible with it. Lacking good instructions and some tips on music and lighting, a first-time learner of this effect will be utterly lost. It will be just a matter of time when he relegates this beautiful prop to his drawer to join his other junk purchases. That will be a pity, for the Floating Light Bulb, when performed correctly, is one of the most beautiful effects in magic. Goon luck. Ben Benjay Manila, Philippines |

Those decorator blubs were commonplace back then. They may still be available in any lamp store here in USA. Many building stores also carry light fixtures and bulbs.
It is an easy matter to remove the inside of a bulb and replace it with the battery gimmick. I did not own this decorator bulb but I did see how Abbott's original version was made and the bulb could be replaced easily. |

Hi,
I found this one over here in the UK. It seems too cheap to be any good. Can somebody private message me with the workings as I'm I wanting to do it on stage but if it's a setup from a stagehand it might not work. http://www.day-industries.co.uk/magicbypost/ |

I purchased that one you mention Matt it was quite dissappointing as you can probably judge by the very small price, it is a TT version very cheap and nasty

Hello All
I have had the privlege to Watch my friend the late Harry Blackstone Jr do the FLB after I appeared w/ him on the "GoodDay NY " TV show. I not only saw him do it in many a large Theatre but I also helped in the Rigging of it , Harry was a Master of it! & had some truly beautiful touches that made it seem... well like Magic The bulb he used was Glass & was totally self contained...he mentioned that he as well as his Father had them specially made. This was a true "Blackstone signature effect " Michael Lee |

As someone else who has been "stage right" with Blackstone many times, I do not feel this is the place to tip any of the details of Harry's routine.
When the time is right another will make it his own and add to it instead of copying Harry. What people fail to realize there is absolutely no out if the mechanism fails. I have been there when it did a couple of times. Only Harry had the personality to work through this.

Why not do the same effect with a large thick lit candle?

I saw lance Burton do this on one of his TV shows, really impressive, especially due to the fact of the sheer thickness of it and the fact that it is lit
