I have been asked to create a flower themed show for a floral festival held in September each year in my area. The shows I do normally get 200 people per show and its a great way of getting lots of kid's parties.
"Something" will keep eating props and ruinging things through out show. In the finale I would like to create a new square circle where then square is a picket fence and the circle is a large flower pot. I had this idea a while back and only just saw Barry Mitchell's very similar version which has inspired me. As in Mr Mitchell's version I would to divide the load so that the TOP of the pot becomes full of flowers and when I lift up the bottomless pot up my rabbit is sitting underneath the pot, on the table, revealing who has been causing all the problems. Having only ever bought square circles here are my concerns. a) What is a good diameter for the bottom of the pot so the rabbit is comfy? E.g. should rabbit be able to turn, lie out straight etc. b)What factors do I need to take into account to make the BA effective? I know many magicians complain that they have been busted with it. c) I would like to use spring snakes with big foam flowers on them to 'jump out' of the pot at the end. Are there are good spring flowers that exist commerically? I have plenty of time to play with the ideas before september and I'd love any suggestions people might have. |

I think that Abbotts might make a prop, that is a large flower stem that grows and grows. In the end, spring snakes pop out of it or the watering can. I can't remember the name of the prop -- I've seen clowns use it now and then.
BTW, if you are going to do something with feather flowers in this show, check out Richard Hughes's flowers. They are awesome! - Donald.

I have made several square circle botanias and have also made flowerpot cones for botanias.
The size of the tube depends on the size of the rabbit. If you use baby netherland dwarfs , it will different from a flemish Giant ( yes, I know a little about rabbits from my 4-H days). The picket fence to hide the black art is good idea but it will depend on stage conditions and the distance between the fence uprights. I can also make the spring snakes and you could make your shooting flowers blooms. PM me and I will be happy to work on some things with you. But as I have a busy summer season, we should get talking on ideas soon.

Here is an idea that you might want to try, I am assuming the square circle is going to be on some sort of table, why not load the rabbit after, all the snakes come out, you remove the square circle from the table and have all the snake flowers draped across the table, bunch them all up and pretend your smelling the flowers which will give you cover to load the rabbit onto the table, you could make a load bag from the same material as the snake/flowers and just remove it when you take the snakes away to reveal the rabbit! this was just a quick thought that way you don't have to worry about making the square circle big you can keep it smaller!
good luck Greg

Sounds good!
Unfortunately, I can't guarentee angles on the stage area so I might not be able to get away with it! Great idea though. I LOVE Richard's flowers, I recommend everyone check out his website and products. I'd like to do a picket fence front but I might but perspex behind the picket fence to help the BA illusion. What size rabbit loading spaces do people use? |

I produce a Netherland Dwarf at the end of my Children's Show. She is hidden away in a small fabric bag which is maybe 8 inches by 6 inches. Of course the bag stretches out (because it's fabric) but she isn't able to move around much. I am careful to make sure she is as comfortable as possible as she is in the bag for about 10 minutes. From working with her so much I have gathered that she doesn't mind being in small places as long as it isn't for an inordinate amount of time. She never complains or fusses when I put her in the bag (so far so good).
Given the nature of rabbits they are probably just fine being confined for a short period of time. Hope this helps. Jered

You could try making a false bottom to the flower pot and you wouldn't even have to worry about the BA in an outdoor festival setting. When ready to reveal, just release the bottom and there is the bunny - tada ;-)

I'd like to show the pot clearly empty at the start and since I have rabbit AND flower load it might be a bit tricky.

Thanks, Julie.
I guess I was wrong in remembering the goofus plant (I also saw it the other day on the Hocus Pocus website, too, and realized my post wasn't quite correct). Isn't there a prop called Sad Castle, where it is basically a square circle, two compartments (top and bottom) and you produce a bunny on your table surface at the end? I don't know which dealer carries it, sorry. I think that Duane Laflin's video, The Rabbit Production Video, might be of use to you. I think that Sad Castle might be demonstrated on that video, and might give you ideas for how to make the prop you want. I think I saw "Flourish Dude" perform the Sad Castle, too. Perhaps he will chime in on this thread. I don't do any magic with animals, so sorry I can't be of any further help to you. - Donald.

I've been think lots about square circles and different fun themes. Here is a few...
• A giant red battery inside of box that has a lightning bolt cut out of the front…produces a shower of sparks and electric blue silks. • A garbage bin inside of junk yard with chicken wire over perspex front produces a “junk yard dog” • Flower pot in a picket fence produces flowers • A big tin of tomatoes in a shopping bag with the words “FOOD” cut out of the front produces tomatoes. • A brick tower in a jail cage produces a prisoner (and old one but a good one) • A box of popcorn in box decorated with a giant film strip. The frames are holes covered in overhead projector film, maybe even with images printed on them! Produce popcorn, drinks, or a video camera. • A empty tube with a picture of clark kent on it goes inside a phone box. A 3d superman flies out on IT or on a spring! • An empty box with candle on the front goes into an old fashion lamp. Flame comes out of the top OR the tube is removed a giant light bulb fills the middle. • A saucepan is put in the top of an empty microwave through a hole in the top. Sparks and smoke fly out. |
