DMC has been recording a few clips recently of performances with the ALPHAS, he just uploaded a couple and I think they capture what I love about the ALPHAS. I think a lot of people on here will recognise the processes that he's using to achieve the effects, but the guys' reactions are so genuine, I really like it.

Hi everyone,
Hoping you're all safe and well. Yes as Phill said, finally filmed a handful of routines this week to show a little of what's possible with these cards. In the simplest terms, experience has shown that any seemingly random sequence that leads to the production of a spectator's name (or better yet - the name of a loved one "that you don't even know"), leads to such a deeply personal and poweful reaction from your spectator. You shuffle, they shuffle - whatever the sequence may be - and then suddenly they're looking down at the name of their child, grandmother or wife ... it's a beautiful thing to watch every time. I've uploaded two versions of the "Hands Off" routine - one of my favourites with the deck - and by chance got lucky both times, being able to then switch in another name and have a secondary reveal. Phill has linked one above, and the second version is below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nKXlM2CcBE Super powerful; I hope this helps to spark a few ideas with the cards. Incidentally - for anyone with a regular deck, using this very same handling to reveal a birthday / PIN number / phone number with the card values also generates very strong reactions. Best, - DMC. |

Wondering if the ‘Hands Off’ routine is included in the Alpha’s Passport?

Can anyone recommend any other favourite routines for this deck? Aside from those in the DMC Passport and David Regal's Letter Perfect which I'm already quite familiar with. Just looking to explore and expand my use of this lovely deck...

Hi Foucault, yes below a handful of links for you to explore:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSIt0CUpqC8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFZRzxJ8JMk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qp3TORRVr-o https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nKXlM2CcBE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHvDSd9zXGA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3oY51oMYqI Having played with the ALPHAS now for a few years, I have found that when it comes to magical impact there is little that can touch the simplicity of a spectator randomly generating either their own name, or the name of a loved one. From the above links my HANDS OFF and GOOSE CHASE routines have proven themselves incredibly powerful, and with the additional packet switch afterwards you then have a wonderful extra beat. Of course, for a spectator to deal their own name you have an effect that's plenty powerful, but if you're able to combine a little pre-show and reveal a name that you the magician 'couldn't have even known in the first place', you're then moving in to real miracle territory. Done at the right moment and with the right energy, having people's eyes well up with tears is not infrequent with these effects. Of course there is then a wide spectrum of existing routines (Triumph, Cards Across, signed card effects, etc) that are made only more powerful and meaningful through the introduction of someone's name or initials, so do have a look over your existing card repertoire to see how incorporating a special word or a spectator's name could add a new dimension to some of your current routines. We've also promised a brick of ALPHAS to the first magician to create a coherent and logical 'Sam the Bellhop' routine with the ALPHAS - DMC. EDIT: Looking to put a few of my favourite routines into printed form at some stage, but if anyone needs handling tips for now drop me a DM on Instagram and happy to go through some pointers on a Zoom call. |

The connection people have with playing cards appears to have changed. With so many alternative forms of entertainment available, their use - and people's familiarity with the make-up of a deck- must surely be in decline. I adore your twist on Triumph. With this deck you've really personalised the routine and lifted its emotional resonance. (I'd also be interested to know more about the pre-show employed as that's an artform in its own right!). HANDS-OFF is a stunning routine that can be found in the DMC Passport to ALPHAS book if anyone is interested. Goose Chase is another really hard-hitting routine. I'm sure we'd all love to know more. Has this routine been published anywhere? Many thanks for taking the time to share routines and offer inspiration! |

So glad you enjoy them, gents. I haven't printed anything yet (on either the Goose Chase routine or the pre-show that I use), but hoping to find the time to put something out later this year. Meantime - just drop me a message for any handling tips, happy to help out.
Best, - DMC. |

A video I shot explaining my version of Goose Chase is explained on the DMC ALPHAS user group on Facebook - DMC obviously handles it differently but it's such a nice effect - it's more *immediate* than hands off, but there are moments when each have their right time.

That's it, it's the same core method that I'd been discussing with DMC for a while, but it didn't have the name when I recorded that which is why I didn't call it Goose Chase - DMC does it in a slightly more freewheeling way, once you understand the method you can usually figure out some way to do it in a very impromptu and loose feeling way.
The 'balance' of the trick is different because it happens more in your own hands, and it's easier to control the pace of the effect so if you want a faster punch the Goose Chase method is more immediate than the Hands Off method. Hands Off is more possible on Zoom though I've found so I've been doing that quite a lot, it's a great piece and still hits really hard. Phill

For the "Hands off" routine provided in the passport to Alphas book I use Peter Turner's pre-show he does in his first penguin lecture,in my opinion it is one of the most cleanest ways to do pre-show!

Can I ask where in the FB group this is? I'm in there, and scanned through it and don't see any recent posts...

I really enjoy doing 'Goose Chase' and 'Hands Off', by DMC, both of which were included in the purchase. One of my favourite tricks is the Bannon Triumph and doing it with the Alpha deck is an awesome idea. Thanks @imacmagic! I wonder if anyone else would like to add any traditional playing card tricks that go well with the Alpha deck? I will be going through my 'repertoire' to see if any lend themselves to being 'lettered'. It would be great to hear if anyone else has done the same.
