Cameron,
What I think he means is that when these used to be Lectures and not Acts the Lectures would be presented in front of a live magic club type audience. I found that explaining the effects in front of the magic club really didn't add anything to the lectures, the questions they would ask where almost never insightful and would mostly consist of "can you do that again?" which is redundant when the explanation is being recorded for video. Dan does a pretty good job of knowing what are the right questions to ask, what are the right insights to add, and when things need to be clarified. |

I don’t love all of these and it’s true that sometimes there was a better energy in the room with seemingly more people to play off for the performances. I do think Dan does a good job extracting pertinent information.

One thing I will say about some of those early lectures (as someone who attended quite a few of the first year or so), there was one small monitor in the corner of the room and those attending the lecture in person couldn't really see the close-up magic as well. That is why you would have a lot more of "could you repeat the move" or "do it again". Also have to understand, that while I purchased quite a few after seeing them live, there were a majority of folks who attended it in person and took notes because they were not buying the final run. Yes, it was being recorded for video, but not many attending in person were purchasing it. They treated it as if they were going to a lecture at a magic convention.
The folks at P3 really made great improvements in production value, both for the folks in person and watching at home. Go back and look at those early lectures against just the wood wall before the accent lighting and overhead studio lighting. More monitors in the room for the live audience. Eliminated the four or five couches and lounges for chairs for a much larger audience. Drapes, backdrops. They really have made it a great destination to watch magic. My understanding was about a year or so ago, I think there was an arrangement made where folks could purchase a ticket to the recording and then get a discount on downloading the final copy later. I may have misunderstood that. |

I agree completely. The P3 crew is spectacular and the audience experience has been markedly improved!

I work as a professional mentalist and loved David's live act. It doesn't necessarily teach a lot about magic but it teaches a lot about entertainment and also serves as a reminder to HAVE FUN performing. I love Penguins NEW LIVE ACT format because you can see the performers complete show and structure in front of a real audience, that is something that can't be done or perfectly emulated in a normal lecture format. I have enjoyed a lot watching Dave, Cody and specially Marc Paul performing live.

Tim, sorry for the late reply. Yes I work for Penguin but Dave McCreary does not. If you watch the Café often you will see that Penguin employees do not make posts on the Café very often. I would guess maybe once or twice a month. If I'm making a post on here it's because it's a personal favorite and I think others would benefit.

I don't think he meant to suggest the lectures should be presented for the lay public, which seems to be what you understood. I sought to clarify, seems I only made things more confusing and this probably isn't helping but I hope it does. |

I prefer the performances in front of a lay audience (which didn't happen all the time in the past, sometimes the performances and explanations used to be in front of the magic club people), but of the very few live ACTs ive seen I do miss the magic club attendance. It has more to do with blocking. For example; Jans first lecture featured a card mentalism piece, and as fantastic as it was, I think it would have been a little bit harder to translate to the screen if it hadn't been for the 3 magicians replaying the roles of the spectators from the previous night. There was a moment where a sleight occurs, and it helped tremendously having Jan show us how to use the audience blocking itself as a cover. He also used the magic spectators to perform the piece again with a different flavour and reveal, just to show how versatile it was.. I cant see that being possible without the magic club set up. I did read your previous post and you made some good points Mac.. Its true that the majority of the questions where only there to benefit the Live audience itself (for visibility and such). And we now don't have the constant problem of not being able to hear the questions because they forgot to provide them with a Mic. But I have briefly skimmed back through all of my previously bought lectures, and there were quite a few great questions from audience members about situational things, or ¨What if this happens¨ style questions that did help.. I think it really depends on the performer and the type of effects they are bringing to the table. I have friends who have done the Penguin/at the table lectures and their material is easily explainable with just the host present, while I can think of a few performers who would feed off of other magicians being there, or their material is easier to teach when replaying the possible outcomes with spectators there. |

The act is super funny. I really enjoied just to watch the performence. David remind me the amazing jonatan wich I admire. Yes, I also have subscripotns for all penguin live and I don't like the new idea of the acts. But the sponge balls monte is one of the most funny routine I ever saw. And david have really good insights. Also his another opener is very good. If you want to know, from the last month the acts that was very good was from cody fisher and marc paul.

Tomd,
You're right, some effects that involve a lot of spectators and moving parts might be more easily explained with a few stand-ins. However, overall my feeling is that the new format is better than the previous. I'm sure just as Penguin was able to improve the previous format over time they will improve this new format as well. I think Penguin should with the performers they hire, making clear the purpose of the new format is to present an act with structure not a fist full of tricks cobbled together. Menny Lindenfeld is a perfect example of what not to do, as he even says as much in his explanations. What he did was not an act, it was an excuse to book together lecture. Jon Armstrong is a shining example of what this new format should be. He actually presented one of his acts from his working repertoire! He explained not only the tricks but the structure of the act as well, why he chose the effects that he did and more importantly why he put them in the order that he did. That's the true value of this new format, not just the tricks but the thoughts behind them. We need more Acts like Jon's, I hope penguin can make sure that what we get. |

This is BRILLIANT! get this lecture, erm, actually, don't bother, the less people that know about this the better! Seriously though, it's awesome, funny, original, entertaining and everything is usable commercial material. One of the best Penguin lectures ever!
