I have had my rabbits for nearly a year now and I have recieved many great tips for them from these forums. I thank you all.
Now it is May here in the UK and my rabbits are shedding their fur. I have a black lop and a grey lop. The black lop is shedding but it is not visible untill you pick him up and my shirt gets plastered in fur! My grey rabbit is patchy now because he has shedded about half of his fur now (browny in the winter but now its slowly appearing pure grey. He looks funny!) Are there any special requiremnts for the rabbits whilst they are sheding? How long will it last? Should I notice any behaviour changes? Should I still pick them up or leave them for a week or two? Any help would be great. Thanks James |

James,
I came here asking to ask about the same thing. Only I wondered if anyone knew of a good way to "help the shedding along" and get her looking good for the up coming shows. Anyone have any suggestions? Edd Visit Edd and Beans at http://www.wizardofsorts.com

As the weather gets warm, my rabbits do the same thing. I learned years ago to try to take care of the problem before you do a production and have a cloud of fur produced as aftermath.
I have an outdoor portable dog pen that I keep my rabbits in when the weather is good. I bought some black drainage pipe that they love to crawl through. This usually gets most of the shedding fur to come free. This year I picked up some of the texture cat scratching pads for wall corners and adheared them on the inside of the tube openings. I clean the scratch pads off every once in a while and it seems to be doing the job. Of course there is still shedding this time of the year, but this cuts down on the problem and the rabbits seems to enjoy it. |

Rabbits, like dogs, cats, and hamsters or any fur animal would love your attention to them. Just purchase an animal bursh and groom them. It does not take that long and you can share a bonding moment.

Thanks guys. I brush them every few days. Should I notice a change in behaviour whilst they're in their molting period?
Thanks James |

It's actually important to brush them so they don't eat the fur. They can't deal with hair balls the way a cat does.

Is your rabbit fixed? Mine isn't and he's been partying with balloons and stuffed toys lately! XBob |

Yep I had mine done (the rabbits) a few months ago. I make sure they have plenty of hay because it does help stop furballs occuring like brushing. James |

Also a little of the cat laxative molasses on their front paws. Mine licks it clean. I can't remember what the ingredients are exactly but mine is from Hartz Mountain and is called Hair Ball Remedy.

I'm sure you said "he", however, if "he" is a "she" a different set of rules may apply. Females will pull out their own hair to prepare for delivering young. New cages may be in your future! (Some have false pregnacies too!)
