I've seen that it is popular for some magicians to refer to satan/demons. Even in the far past, magicians used pictures of a demon on their poster who, for instance, whispered words in their ear. I understand that this is to make sure that the one being fooled would actually even believe that what you did is real.
Yes, there are people that do believe that magicians have gotten power from demons. Nothing to worry about you would say? Many great magicians gave their audience the same thought pattern. But it is a problem for me since I am a Christian. I am not looking forward to be looked at by others like I have help from a demon. Other people might think that would be cool, I do not really like it. Would it be possible to do magic, without the need to rely on the supernatural as explanation, even maybe making clear that you are fooling them. But not in a comical way like tommy cooper. I like what the man did but its not what I want to do. There can be little "joke" moments like telling the person to not lose my hands out of sight so that I can move the important stuff around in my pocket without them seeing. Is there not a way you can completely get away with fooling them, while making sure they know good enough that they have been fooled. Surely there has to be some sort of way to do this without actually making the audience go away because nobody likes a fooler, fool me once, fool me twice you know. So yeah I am wondering what your thoughts are about this. |

It is all in the presentation. I have never had anyone tell me I am possessed by a demon in 30 years.

This is really weird, you are the second person who does not seem to know that yes, there are people that believe magicians are helped by demons... But I guess that the people who believe this demon crap is a minority group then that I happend to stumble on. Still I am gonna find a way to remove all connection to the supernatural. I am very glad that you and another person act like you do not even know what I am talking about. It means that the problems is far less serious then I thought. I am sorry for the stupid question in that case.

They are not Devils, they are Imps, which cost thrupence each down the magic shop. So if you sell your soul to the Devil for 1/6 pence, which is three sixpences, then you can afford half a dozen.

Yes but its because I do not want anyone to think a demon helped me.
I do not want to raise that suspicion. I understand that most people do not really take it as serious as me. Like I said, I am a Christian. I do not want anyone to think I have power from a demon or worse, from God. This is my concern. But yes I do agree that I maybe am thinking on a to deep level about this. I apologize. |

No need to apologize. Your experience is just as valid as anyone's. Questions are welcome!

Magic as we do it has nothing to do with demons or other supernatural entities. In fact, for a performer to claim such a connection falls into the realm of charlatanry.
That being said, people are entitled to their opinions, and some don't like magic anyway. But if you're going to do a trick for somebody and right up front state that you're just fooling them, then you're not doing magic: you're basically saying, hey, I know and you don't. It becomes a puzzle, not a magic trick. Best solution? Don't perform for those people. There are lots of others who will enjoy magic.

If it is presented as fiction it is not charlatanry but if it is offered as a fact it is. Magic, in general, is an evocation, a calling of sprits. Spiriti mihi infernali, obedite!

Early in my career working a nursing home I was accused of being a "spiritita" or one who consorts with spirits. I didn't like that but I realized that if this person thought I had special powers, I was doing my job right. I to am Christian, and don't like giving credence to anything occultist. However under the right circumstances and for the right audience MIGHT take some creative license to effectively show something out of my comfort zone. I wouldn't be advocating a belief in anything, just exhibiting a misunderstood aspect of our Christian belief. Having said that, I try to keep things pretty tame.

I've been fascinated by this for many years, being a kid who grew up in Catholic schools. Why are the "spirits" a magician "consorts" with always perceived as evil by some people? Why is the "supernatural" perceived as taboo? Catholics believe in angels and saints, both of whom fall into the "supernatural" category.
I don't need to worry about it, or even understand it -- I just think it's fascinating.

There is not such thing as demons.
I suggest you watch a ton of Johnny "Ace" Palmer videos. He's a FISM world champion Christian magician who makes it very clear during his sets that he is doing things that only appear to be magical. Study his scripts, as he has lines in there are make it plain to the audience.

Can I just clarify something here. The magicians in those STUPID videos about demons are not claiming they get their magic from demons at all! Some morons who take their performances and make a video compilation out of it, without the magicians consent, or even knowledge I'm sure, are the ones claiming they must be guided by demons. It is nothing to do with the magicians themselves.
Unless we are talking about different things here, can you show me a link to a video of a magician claiming a demon helps him do his tricks? As people have already said, it's a load of bull. Also, those videos are put out for cash and views and more cash on YouTube. There used to be just one guy, called Xendrius, who was rabid about demons helping magicians. He got millions of views per video. Before too long others noticed and wanted a piece of that cash, so now there are a few of them recycling the same old nonsense. Why you are taking them so seriously is a mystery to me. No offence. I just don't understand. When I saw them I was part amused, part disgusted. It's not only insulting the magicians and taking away the credit they deserve for practicing for years, but it also takes advantage of a seemingly very gullible audience, judging by the comments I read on the videos. Hence my disgust. I understand you that you don't want to be painted like that but honestly, you won't be. I could almost guarantee it! As much as I could guarantee that demons won't help you with your magic. (They are so busy these days..)

It seems to me, the films referred to be for amusement purposes only. I doubt that anybody would believe them - with the exception of 97% of scientists.

I suggest you find one of those Xendrius films and have a read of the comments. It seems that many people from Indonesia believe them. They appear to have a strong belief in the occult. I don't know why but I imagine it will be historic and traditional. Some other countries stand out too. There are many Americans too. Christians, judging by the mentions of Jesus and such.
Oh they believe it all right! Still, it is likely a small minority of the general population. Thankfully.

Be sure to check out Darwin Ortiz' "Beat the Devil". Whether you're religious or not, it's a nice story when someone defeats the "demon". Lynn
