I have received doves through the mail before. They come by plane through the post office. I was just informed today by my breeder that the post office has changed their routing and cannot ship live animals to my city (Omaha) anymore. Is this the only way she can ship them? I would be willing to pay extra for a different mode of transportation. Does anyone have any ideas?

Bry, I'd check with your local post office for the latest regulations. I haven't had any trouble so far. If the post office delivers express mail to your city, it should be alright to ship doves. Omaha is a major city. There may be some other reason for the regulation.
Some regular airlines will ship them but last I checked, it's really expensive.

My breeder told me that they will only ship on direct flights and the flight routes have changed so that there are no direct flights now. Does ups or fedex ship birds?......

I know Fed x and UPS does not. I don't know the area around Omaha but if there is somewhere close that does have a direct flight, you might be able to go and pick them up.

The post office still ships doves. I received some from Dave this week. He shipped three in a Xerox paper box at a cost of about $25. He lives NJ and I live in AL. It is a good deal.

Bob, my problem was where my dove breeder was shipping from (AZ) the post office did not have any direct flights and they will only transport animals on direct flights.
Dave, do you have doves for sale and can you ship to Omaha?...... |

I don't have any white doves right now. I only have 2 extra brown ring necks. What's your zip code in AZ. I'll check with my local post office.
The only difference I had shipping to Bob was that normally the shipping is overnight but to his location in AL, it was a two day delivery. The birds were fine though.

Bry,
Try the Farmers' Bulletin in MO and ARK. You are surrounded by people with a few doves. The hard part is finding them. The Ag Department has a "farmers'" newspaper they send to poultry growers. It has a classified section (I think the papers and ads are free.). Good Luck! Bob |

Just a note: I was able to purchase six doves from Dr. Wilmer Miller of Ames, IA. He was great to work with. If anyone has heard of Dr. Miller you would know that he is widely known to be a leading expert in doves. He even don'ted one of the doves to me...

You may need to ship them to a friend or family member elsewhere and then have them ship them to you.
