Hello!
I started recently with card magic and I can do decently some / most of the basic sleights (double lift, top palm, some force methods, Elmsley count and etc.). However I struggle with finding good card tricks that use those so I can practice them with whole routines. Most routines I have found are too advanced, require some kind of setup (I don't like tricks with setup) or don't have the basic sleights in them. What are you sources for routines? Can you recommend an Youtube channel or a book or any other source? I have tried "Scarne on Card Tricks" and "The Encyclopedia of Card Tricks" but most of the tricks there don't have sleights. (I know there are similar posts already, but really couldn't find what I was looking for) Am I too picky? |

I think you cannot go wrong with the Semi-Automatic Card Tricks series by Steve Beam.
A second advice would be books by Nick Trost, John Bannon (especially the more recent ones) and Aldo Colombini. Mark |

Royal Road to Card Magic is divided into sections by sleight, and has a number of tricks that use each sleight. Good luck!

I would invest in the Michael Ammar Easy to Master Card Miracles Dvd's
There are 8 volumes I believe, but volume 1-3 especially vol. 2 will be extremely helpful to you.

The Michael Ammar DVDs are a very good idea, especially since on his own website, they sell for $10. This is quite a steal.
So many sleights...so little time.

I've written quite a few books JUST FOR YOU, and also a 4-vol. DVD set. Go to harryloraynemagic.com to learn about them.

Harry..
Maybe he likes DVDs. Perhaps he should view one of yours. I think they are a touch more riveting..(sic). I haven't recovered from them yet. I FINALLY figured out Tag Along Aces. Not an easy trick. You went too fast on that one....for does like me. |

Thanks for the information everyone! I think I'll go with the DVDs because I am really just starting (been practicing since like two months). Seeing something done instead of reading makes it much easier to learn

Hi Incanes, I can recommend the Masterclass by Roberto Giobbi. Also very good stuff.

The books recommended here will bring your magic up to such a level, and you wont be copying soneone else's style from a video, that you will feel the rewards in spades! If you cannot focus and have discipline to read and patiently put what you're reading ibto practise then I don't know how you can expect to develop into a magician. I seriously feel you need the foundation and discipline that the books, and the reading process, give. Please try at least The Royal Road to Card Magic. So simply written a child can learn from it. Yet it teaches soooo much!

I'm not sure how you missed this at the top of the forum section...
https://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/view......forum=41 Look at the most commonly recommended books and go buy a second hand copy, get in a quiet room, with no phone, and just find your reading head!

I'll check these books as well if you recommend them Also I didn't miss the pinned post, no the contrary, I've read it carefully. I have even tried some of those but as I mentioned in the first post I didn't like the tricks / routines described in the books I have tried. They either required preparation or were no challenge at all. For instance in a lot of the routines the only "skill" required was remembering an index card and giving the proper presentation. Yes, it fools most of the people but it is boring as hell for me. That's why I decided to ask in a different post for something more "fun". |

Aah I see. Something I love doing is trawling through old conjuring books, many to be found freely on archive.org if you search for conjuring or magic tricks.
I've found so many tricks that seem to be all but forgotten about. As for no setup tricks, hmmm. I suppose there must be certain books but I don't know I'm afraid. Hopefully soneone can help. Or a video source ;-)

Matthew J. Dowden's 2 dvd set "1 Deck 14 Tricks 24 Hours"
Require no skill, absolutely no sleight of hand. Matthew is a very entertaing, engaging magician. I like his style of performing. I have the set for sale on the Dvd "let's make a deal" section.

It sounded like OP was looking for tricks that used basic sleights to help practice them, so not sure if that would fit the bill.

Big Blind Media's Essential Card Magic DVD set is a really good mixture of teaching sleights, and tricks that use those specific sleights:
https://bigblindmedia.com/products/essen......-montier Although often slated, I find this DVD set pretty good too: https://magicmakersinc.com/courses/cours......rd_magic And if you like DVDs, then to accompany your copy of the Royal Road to Card Magic there's two good DVD sets based on the book: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Magic-Makers-DV......0U1U10TO https://www.murphysmagic.com/product.aspx?id=46683 |

But for someone still mastering the fundamentals of card magic and card handling, I'd suggest instead getting Roberto Giobbi's previous video, which is based on Card College 1 and 2. Roberto Giobbi's Card College 1 & 2 Personal Instruction The Complete Course https://www.robertogiobbi.com/site/produ......e-course This video course was originally sold as a set of 4 DVDs of nearly 8 hours, but is now available as a digital download via Giobbi's website. The 23 individual chapters/lessons sell for €4.95 each, or you can get a significant discount by purchasing all 23 lessons as a package for €49.95. It's very good value given the amount and quality of the content. Giobbi is an outstanding teacher, and has a real insight into how magic works. I wish I had started exploring card magic with this resource many years ago! It's also worth mentioning that the very first lesson of the course is available completely for free as a sampler. It gives a good idea of what to expect from the rest of the course, and it gives a lot of valuable tips about some basic techniques with cards. Lesson 1: Fundamental Techniques https://www.robertogiobbi.com/site/produ......amentals Unlike the first lesson, all later lessons include one or two solid tricks that use the card sleights that are taught. So over the entire course you get to learn around 40 good card tricks, as well as the sleights. |
