When I flew out of town to present a workshop on Magic in the Science Classroom, my flash paper was confiscated at the airport. So was my rubber cement (but that was easily replaced).
If you use flash paper in your act and you travel by plane, how do you get your flash paper to your destination? Ed |

Find an old WET NAPS container and clean it out. Then fill with flash paper instead of wet naps. Always ship flash paper wet wet to be safe. Honestly, who is going to confiscate you wet naps?
Another possiblility is buying a stash tin. These are available at Hemp parafinalia stores for about $20. My favorite looks exactly like a Aquafina water bottle. But the bottle twists and half and has a special compartment inside. If security hassles you, they can even open the bottled water and drink the water. A magic trick all on its own.

OK. But how do you deal with it LEGALLY? That's very clever, but how do full time pros deal with the situation? My flash paper was confiscated. But if I were caught trying to conceal and (effectively) smuggle it, I could be arrested!

Just don't carry it on you. Put it in your suitcase. Get a pill box, and put the flashpaper in there. Hide it deep in your suitcase w/ your toiletries. (Spelling)

It was in my magic trunk--checked as baggage. I might have done better with it in my wallet. It was not only in the trunk, it was in an envelope, inside a box with a trick. They searched my trunk VERY thoroughly.
You are right though. Maybe in a pill box in my suitcase it would not have been found. It still would not have been legal. Ed |

That's exactly what the explosives machines are for in all of the airports. If you think you can pack that in a suitcase even in a waterproof container and then check it or carry it on the trouble is just beginning in your life. You will likely have to do some hard time before its over. Of course when the dog smells Nitro they will clear and shutdown the airport wich should get you a several hundred thousand dollar bill for their losses. The dog does not read labels and know what form of nitro it is. He smells the tiny bits of it that were suspended in the air in the place you packed it. Something like 10,000 time better smell than us or some unbelievable number.
Its just not the smart thing to do in a post 9/11 world. Just buy it where you are going.

I don't understand. So long as it is wet when transported, it is non-explosive. It is harmless. Why would they hassle you if in your checked luggage you had wet flash paper?

It's on the list of prohibited substances. The list doesn't say anything about it being wet.

It could be that customs "suspects" you plan to dry it out...

I was very fortunate that I got away with a polite confiscation (if my wife had been at the airport they would have let her take the flash pad home) and that I was not led away in handcuffs (and not my gimmicked ones, either).

Actually, now that I think about it, it's GOOD that they took away all that flashpaper. It means they're doing their job! I just came up with a brilliant idea though. But a cigarette case and some loose tobacco. The case will be big enough to hide a good amount of flashpaper (pill boxes are a bit small) and they will just be overlooked as rolling paper.

How about placing it in a hallmark tissue bag, and packing it next to a roll of tape, and some ribbon? How would anyone know the difference? As long as you purchase the big sheets, there's nothing that says "Flash Paper... Flamable"

Those sniffing machines can detect minute amounts of specific chemicals. I would place the flash paper in a sealed container and label it as theatrical flash paper just in case they open the container. This way you can't be accused of hiding it.
By the way Dave, great act at the Conclave, and you didn't set the stage on fire unlike someone else we know. |

Had a similar situation with scissors on a trip to perform in Paris, although managed to save knife in arm from confiscation.

If you really want to be serious about this, and were transporting a lot of flash paper, I would (i'm kinda paranoid)call ahead to the airport and ask to speak to some high-up security guy. explain the situation, offer some kind of proof that you are in fact a magician, (an IBM membership card would probably do the trick)and ask them if they could help you transport it in a safe way. they might be really cool and help you.
