Mike, I appreciate the sentiment.
I'm concerned about swamping the original text and illustrations with stuff that will make the book into an unintelligible graffiti wall. Post-its and overlay type markup seems to make sense. Where more than one annotation/commentary/post-it... exists for an entry, we may want to take a tabbed approach. Chris, Mike, anyone got some good examples?

This is a very quick and dirty example of overlapping layers, and having areas for notes and scrolling text. It's ugly, but it's just to show an example:

Here is a thought. What if we just insert pages? Then in a double page view (which my HTML ebooks support) one would have on one side the original text, unedited, and comments on the other side. In this way we would avoid lots of fancy formatting issues.
Or we could do it in a two column format. The left column has the original text, the right column the annotations. Chris....

I kinda liked how Darwin Ortiz annotated Erdnase.
The original print in the center and all the comments written around it. I wonder if that could be done any easier than the other ways. |

Dave, I agree about the 'published' version.
I still need to annotate the thing for my own purposes. Mostly to add text and fix some of the illustrations so they suggest the action and positions better. As to additions...That is tempting. Would have to discuss with him, and any others about making this a sort of 'update every year or two' type project, with all material donated to the 'MCM Project' or something like that.

Jonathan, you can edit my HTML edition. Everything is there in plain text - each page in a separate file. With a simple text editor and some HTML knowledge, or an HTML editor you could start inserting your comments or correct sentences, ...

Okay, for something ridiculously ambitious-
One of the best book/DVD combo’s I have ever owned is Frank Simon’s Versatile Card Magic Revisited. Beautiful photo’s, crystal clear text, great content- and then on top of all that a DVD. Based on that Book/DVD package- Take MCM and REVISIT it completely, add really clear photos, lots of them. Have several of the top coin workers of the world annotate it, add notes and chapters and then add a DVD. Not a DVD of the entire book just selected sleights and routine that would really benefit from it. New cover, printed in three or four volumes, on great stock. I know it’s a dream but imagine it in front of you right now... Wow. |

Replacing the photos with avi clips makes sense. The tough part is taking the process slowly to make USEFUL annotations and comments.
While the student is expected to make minor adjustments to what they find in a book, it would be most foolish to document what is not NEW or significant. The goal then would be to write only the things that are different than what is written, and of those things, only the things than make a difference. ** Establishing links and cross referencing is quite attractive.

I wouldn't do avi videos. Better format is RealMedia or MPEG.

This sounds a fantastic idea, I hope it becomes more than this.
One for Chris- I have several of your books in desktop html and use Repligo to view them on the palm. I found I couldn't use IsiloX to convert the desktop html into isilo format (which would have been a nicer option as I would have been able to open it all in one instead of as single pages like I do now). Is there something I'm missing? Cheers Shanester |

Did anything ever come of the annotation project?
It seems Curtis Kam's videos on Reel Magic are serving a similar purpose but I'm very much a book person as well.

This sounds like a great project. I began exploring Bobo's MCM fairly recently and so far I've barely scratched the surface.
Incidentally, for anyone else new to the book, I've found the Modern Coin Magic DVD set by Magic Makers to be a great help when used alongside Bobo's book. |
