On a previous series of Derren Brown, he'd get someone to put an object under five cups, or so, when he couldn't see it, and then got them to read out the numbers one to five and was able to tell under which cup the object was under. Are there any books explaining how this was done?

Lie detection... he watches for eye movements and listens to speech patterns and tries to find an odd one out.

Nik,
Really? It isn't that thing where he forces, through gesturing and directing what the other person should do, the person to put it under the fourth cup? (I forget what it's called, but it's the exact same effect). |

He actually does that as well. That part is even described on the Channel 4 website.

**** Are you all so naive that you believe his explanations and the Channel Four explanations? Darn, I thought we magicians were past that. Sure he uses some psychology but we all know most of his tricks are what they are, TRICKS.

No, you want to believe most of what he does is just tricks, very few really know how he does most of it.
The object under six cups is what inspired the Russion Routlette stunt, that routine on its own is probably real.

The object under 6 can be achieved in a variety of ways, but you can present it however you want.

No, it isn't terasabos. Like was said above, there are many methods for achieving this, none of them psychological in nature.

I'm with cougar on this, of course it is trickery—c'mon are we mentalists here or not? The psychological presentation is just that, PRESENTATION... a front.
As for methodology, can we not just be a little more original than try to copy Derren? If you're trying to be like Derren then you are always going to be a second best, look for your own angle, your own original style and presentation—be an innovator not an imitator! |

I'm not saying there isn't any trickery, or that you should believe the presentation as an accurate description of the method, but this could be accomplished using lie detection and subtle cueing he suggests. What's so unbelievable about that? If you have someone in a responsive state and you can read them, it is possible.

This isn't the place to discuss methods, but as has been pointed out, it can be done in a variety of ways. The least likely method is the psychological one. I think there was even a method in the old Paul Daniels magic set.

Ironically whilst reading this thread with no real interest in this kind of effect I came up with an idea how to achieve this effect using a borrowed item too. Funny how things pop into your head isn't it?
