Does anyone have recommendations for quickly removing the oily or greasy residue on silver coins that can accumulate after extended handling? I'm looking for something one can do during a gig, between groups/tables, without having to take a break to wash with degreasing soap and water, then drying. Perhaps there is a natural degreasing liquid I don't know about that does not change the patina/color of the silver? Thanks in advance.

Just a guess but what about one of the cloths that are used to clean reading / perscription glasses. $.02.

How are the coins getting dirty? Are folks handling food and then examining the coins?
A microfiber cloth could work, but grease usually needs some kind of soap (or at least liquid) to come off. What if you also got some of those little spray bottles that come with the glasses cleaning kits (they're about palm sized). If you had one with a mixture of mild dish soap & water and another with straight water, you at least wouldn't need a sink to wash the coins. I'd be *really* careful with trying any sort of cloth that has a cleaning chemical in it, as it could discolor the coins (and also irritate your skin). If you use polished / BU coins, you might think about trying a a jeweler's cloth. While the polishing compounds in the cloth might pick up the grease, and clean everything up without having to actually wash the coins, you don't want to have extended exposure to those compounds (the MSDS recommends that you "Wash hands thoroughly after handling" [1]). The coins obtain natural oils that make them greasy enough to the touch to impede the handling, especially with hands that are already so dry, things slip easily from them.
Thank you, these are good suggestions. I tried the eyeglass cloth; works like a towel. Improves it but it could use a degreaser. Currently trying two things: Rubbing alcohol in a small container and hand sanitizer. Believe it or not, the hand sanitizer works quite well. I'm avoiding any chemical for metal, like the silver polishing cloths, etc. since my intention isn't to polish and remove patina, but just to make the coins free of grease, like after you wash them with soap and water. |
