Hello Magic Pals,
I would like to revitalise an old thread stopped around 2015 on this interesting topic. I am looking for a routine “not too gimmicked” to be performed on stage or parlour Any update on new handlings, concepts ( from Archer to Looch and to the recent Carey one)? Any suggestion is more than welcome Thanks a lot in advance Ciao/Fabio |

Steve Bargatze's "I Hate Kids" effect is simple, and kids (as well as adults) enjoy it.
In my version, however, the kid reads my mind and WINS the two dollar bill. George |

Two suggestions for you: Your Lucky Nite from the book Safwan Papers and Disjuncture from Stimulacra. Probably two of the best versions I've ever seem and they're "not too gimmicked".

Lem, where is the Cassidy version published? Why do you recommend it over others?

Fagani, I almost forgot... maybe you should check Sebastian's Live Act. His version (Envelope Test) is pretty much the very best you can get out of it (it's his closer). 5 Envelopes shuffled by the audience... each participant selects an envelope at random... in the end the envelope left for the performer contains the check... the amount of value in the check will match their choices (no nail writer) and the other envelopes will form the final message to the audience. I can't imagine a more powerful envelope test. It fits the "not too gimmicked" you're going for, but requires a few sleights.

Sorry for the 3 posts in a row... but I just came across Bank Wave by John Carey. You should definitely check it out... as it might be exactly what you're looking for.

I would recommend the TKO or 'any spectators card, to any spectators wallet' by jeff Kaylor. Its a really cool gimmick that allows such an easy and hands of handling of bank night. Your not really gimmicking the envelope but your clothes instead. It also has loads of uses so your not limited to just bank night. Bank wave is also really good too.

Just a thought on this approach...
several decades ago I offered a person three small purses saying, "One of these purses contains a dollar bill. Only one." The I prattled about mental influence and such and got him to select one. He open the purse and did indeed find the dollar and was very please. Then I opened the other two to reveal $5 and $10 bill. Lots of laughter and the 'victim' waving his bill and saying, "more than you got!" Recently I had call an urge to do this again. Different reaction. The guy getting the free dollar sorta shrugged and ab out half the group snickered - the other silent. When I revealed the other bills the 'victim' cried, "You cheated me!" Several others mumbled and one offered, "I thought only car dealers used bait and switch." Make what you will of this. I guess I am not in tune with today's audience at all.

Just adding context to my earlier comment, which was written on a crowded train (like this one actually).
To be clear, as it may not have been, I really like the Safwan Papers. I’m sure I’m on record saying that when it was first released but if not, it’s very nice. Seven is a very well constructed effect in particular. So it’s definitely recommended. |
