Maybe it is just me, but I cringe every time I come across a performance clip or picture of Dani Ortiz sucking an audience members finger for a laugh. I have always been a fan of Dani's thinking and dedication to the art, but not so much his presentation. Sucking on a finger goes beyond trying to explain it from a "cultural" point of view.....whether it be Spain or Van Nuys, California(a joke in bad taste). Never been a fan of the revelations of a card from a shoe or the folded up card in mouth bits from other performers either......especially when they hand the card back to the spectator.
By the way, this is not Howie Mandell...... |

It's funny, (to me).
I doubt anyone could get away with it except him, though. I'm going to assume he wouldn't do it to just anyone, and is doing some careful audience-picking. David Williamson got away with some straight-up stupid stuff back in the 80s and 90s because he, and probably only he, could. And it was funny and entertaining. I think Dani has one of the most unique styles out there. He does it because he can get away with it, and aside from a few exceptions, I don't think people are offended. |

Dani DaOrtiz is, in my opinion, the #1 cardician today. He's a Genius.
Do you know why? Because he found techniques and ruses and what have you that are unique to him, that only he can do and be successful. And this allows him to explain in lectures and DVDs, everything he does, knowing that hardly anyone in the known universe would be able to do what he does the way he does! In other words, he makes money with people who want to know how he does his tricks, but then, after discovering the secret, put them aside saying "I could never do that the way he does it". I've been guilty myself, but not any more … I've learnt the lesson. Anyway kudos to DaOrtiz! Now, when I watch him, I just enjoy the show, and I couldn't care less of his methods! He's the best!!! Now let's get to the finger sucking: no, I do not like it at all! And believe me: I'm an atheist, sarcastic, no bigot person! I like black and dirty humour, porn, horror films and so on. But I don't like him sucking fingers nor showing his nipples. But, at the same time, I agree with whoever says that only he can get away with it (think about Paul Daniels ending up kissing a woman spectator called to assist him on her lips!). I see him as Mirò (another Spaniard). Before daring painting a few dots and a few lines on a huge canvas and calling it art, he demonstrated that he was able to paint a perfect picture of a landscape or a portrait or a still life.. In other words, he had already established himself as incredible talented artist, before putting a few coloured dots here and there and giving them a title as "Prison cell" or something like that. And DaOrtiz, has clearly shown us what he's capable of, before showing us his nipples. Nevertheless, I don't think he needs to do it. He's great as he is, ain't he??? Mark |
