Here's a fun little 'something' I've been doing for years that may be of use to someone.
I do primarily corporate events. These people are grafted to their phones and would rather lose a limb than turn that sucker off. So it's not uncommon for someone in the audience to get a phone call. It's disruptive and traditionally I just ignored it or delivered a standard line and moved on. One day I started to wonder if there was a way to turn a disruption into a postive. I started to keep an Invisi*le Deck on the corner of my table. When the phone rings, I'll stop what I'm doing and look at the person answering it. This generally gets a nervous chuckle or two. If it appears that they aren't finding out their dog died or their house is on fire, I'll ask them to ask the person they're talking to to name ANY card out of a deck. As I ask the question I'm passing my Invis*ble Deck to someone to hold. The person on the other end of the line -- the one who isn't at my show -- names a card and guess what? It's the only one face down in the deck. You need to be sensitive and handle it properly...but it can be an unexpected highlight. For years now I've been very happy when the phone rings. Hope this is of use. David

Great idea, David. A lot of other "phone" routines run through my head as well. Perhaps a prediction envelope with the callers name and something they're thinking written inside of it (that you weren't sure what it meant until now), the exact time they were going to call, their phone number, etc. If they can "Facetime" or something like that, even a drawing duplication, color match, etc. Even directly involve the caller in something that is already going on as part of the show if possible. All of course...as you said...if handled sensibly, sensitively and properly.

Thanks David! As always, highly constructive content from you.
I love the directness of the ID, but I don't like the aesthetic of it (just a turnover card...) , so personally I would use my version of the Brainwave Deck, which I found essentially better.

I've seen a show where the mentalist had people get out their cellphones and call people for this effect.

Another idea would be to use M*n* T*k*l deck(s) and produce a duplicate of a card they were "thinking" of. Perhaps along with a written prediction in a wallet, envelope, etc.

Also, if you are well versed in any s****t writ**g technique, you can basically predict anything using this "interruption".

That's really clever - especially handing the deck off to another spec to hold on to, takes the heat off of you.

Great idea. However, do you find that it disrupts the trick you are doing? How do you find a convenient place to stop?

I had my In***ble De*k in my briefcase this morning and was inspired to try this out. It worked well and was fun to do. Thanks!

The whole issue is that the show has already been disrupted. I was just trying to come up with a way to turn a negative into a positive.
