All media, no matter what the format has to be played on some device. That playback device and the format of the encoding will both be obsolete with time. By design and supposed efficiency.
That 2TB card is going to make a nice earring stud when the iPhone XX comes out. "It's 10:00PM, 2030. Do you know where your data is?" Anyway, for the sake of argument, I'm not sure that having music available 24/7 is a great thing. We used to make music together in living rooms, on porches, in workplaces, places of worship, holidays, where music was about a relationship with other people. Or it was a special occasion when groups of people got together to hear musicians live. Fortunately for printed matter, paper has a pretty good track record and doesn't appear to be on its way out. But the other day I was in a library in Manhattan, and it had two spacious floors. And there was a wonderful large space with rows of computers, and a few walls of current DVDs, and beautiful photos of birds and mountains on the walls, and an automatic check out machine, and photo displays of authors who had birthdays that month. There was a children's area where they could sit at tables and do homework and take poetry lessons. But as I left I said to the lonely man at the front desk, "It's a lovely comfortable library. Just one question...where the heck are the books?" Now, get off my lawn.

The old Egyptian temples were not places where they stored their knowledge but rather the temples were the knowledge. One has to be initiated in order to read them, so it was pretty safe and lasted a long time.

Landmark there are still places in the works that gather to sing and play music. Heck it is the rare family near Branson that doesn't do exactly as you describe. My wife's family is from Spain and it happens weekly.
Do not despair! It happens a lot.

Here in the SF/Bay Area, we have "pickin' and fiddlin' potlucks every month...good food, no bad vibes, people really sharing music and food with one another. Also some of the local musicians host parties at their own houses on occasion. If there are any local music shops in your area, check their bulletin boards. btw you are NOT required to perform. I often just listen! Lynn |

The pubs in Ireland are full of wonderful singers. My wife is Irish and she and all Irish girls seem to be able and willing singers. We English are less willing, more reserved I guess.

The major point and advantage of physical media is completeness. Having MP3's of your favorite hits is great, it's like you're a DJ, but it doesn't even whiff the artists-vision.
To play a complete album/tape/CD as the artist intended is a completely different immersive experience than playing 12 random hit.

Do they even write music with that intent any more?

I’m old fashioned. To me, nothing beats an actual PHYSICAL CD or DVD that I can hold in my grubby little paws and say ‘It’s MINE. I own this, as opposed to some link floating around out there in cyber space that may or MAY NOT be around tomorrow.
I’ve been burned too many times with streaming. And when I get burned, I be steaming!!

I know. But they all tell me CD’s and DVD’s, my preference, are dinosaurs. So I guess that makes me old fashioned.
I’ll never change.

The Ongoing History of New Music is a radio program produced in Canada. The program first aired in 1993 on CFNY-FM in Toronto. The Ongoing History chronicles the history of alternative rock, from its roots in punk and new wave to the modern day. An episode of the show may profile an important musician or band (Sex Pistols, The Smiths, R.E.M., Foo Fighters, The Cure, Nirvana, U2, Nine Inch Nails, The Velvet Underground, etc.), a significant musical trend such as grunge or Madchester, or a theme such as payola, gay musicians or significant cult figures. It was produced directly by CFNY until 2008, when Cross left the station to become the head of Corus' new media division.
In 2005, Cross also began production of a daily podcast available freely from their website. Relevance? The Ongoing History of New Music did a great podcast on the history of the CD a while back. You should be able to find it on various podcast sources (including Spotify, and also the Apple podcasts app). Used to have them all on vinyl when I was a boy!
That cover on “Whip Cream” for me at that time was the stuff that dreams are made of. It wasn’t so much the whip cream that made me dream, but the “other delights” that got my young mind to thinkin’. I wonder if she is still around?
