Laugh out loud. If written properly it translates to this:
No trees were killed in the making of this message, but a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.

I wondered the same thing when I first came here. LOL tends to be incredibly over-used in my opinion, but it's important to convey the right slant to otherwise dry text and LOL will do for me simply to give me the picture that the writer is in a good mood.
