I'm trying to learn to riffle cull. Can anyone tell me if this is something you need a natural talent for (super quick reflexes) or is it a skill anyone can acquire.

Presuming the nerves and muscles in your hands are normal, anybody can learn to riffle cull.
What most people can't do is dedicate the many hundreds of hours of practice required in order to become proficient at it. You've no doubt seen Arnolds excellent demos here on the forum, ask him how much practice time he put in ... and decide up front if you're willing to put that kind of time in to perfect your riffle chops.

Thanks Mr Bones. No, I'm new to this part of the Café, so I haven't seen anything by Arnold.

It's one of those moves that is simple on paper but frustratingly difficult in practice. It's not "knacky" and it's not one of those moves where you will move one finger 1/100th of an inch and it will suddenly work.
That's no reason not to keep trying, though! |

I think it depends on what one means by Riffle Culling. One can cull cards on the pickup. Or a partner can help cull and so on. I have a feeling that our friend means Riffle Stacking?

Both terms can be commonly used to describe placing cards while riffle shuffling, either one works.
Here's AMcD's latest video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cE-jYiQ0aWk Most scufflers would call this particular type of demonstration Riffle Stacking, as Tommy noted above.

I would think it would be difficult to respond to the question posed by lemonjug without a more precise definition as to specifically what he is referring to and moreover what technique he is practicing, if any.

Thanks for your help everyone. I'm referring to a method I saw on a DVD by Jeff Wesmiller (?) a long time ago. I think it's called the Dougall riffle cull (or something like that). I'm also thinking of getting Reflections, if it's still available, to learn a move I've heard Dai Vernon was fond of. Sorry to be so vague.

Thanks for the good words Mr. Bones.
You'd be surprised to know that I didn't spend that much time on riffle stacking. Of course, I didn't reach that level overnight, I put serious training into it, but not as much as you could think. At the very beginning, maybe it happened that I spent 3 hours at it in one day, you know what it is, the excitation of a brand new thing . But, more seriously, I have rarely practiced stacking more than 1 hour per day, which is nothing when you compare with the average time spent watching television by most people. Or if you learn a foreign language. I still practice stacking, for like 20 to 30 minutes per day. Sometimes, I do 40 minutes, but it's not common. Therefore, sorry to disappoint you, but I have never practiced 6 hours per day, nor 8 nor 10 or even more, like guys like Richard Turner say they do. To me, if you have to practise that much, it means there is a serious problem somewhere. Riffle stacking is difficult, if you want a nice rhythm, not much hesitation, etc.; but if you practice well, you'll get good results. I'd say that after one year of good training, you'll be surprised by your level. Split stacking, or stacking more than one card simultaneously (like I demo on the video you link above) is a very different beast to tame. A much more difficult one lol. Even if I have good results, let me assure you that I find it very difficult. To be honest, I have demoed split stacking tons of times, mostly on Facebook for the last 6 or 7 years and I have always found very intriguing that people didn't react more. They sure like it, they give some interesting comments, etc. But I wonder if one of them has really ever wondered how hard it is to split 10 cards in two groups of 5 or 9 cards in 3 groups of 3 at decent speed. I'm under the impression that people think it's easy for me. Okay, I can't complain, I have a decent level, but, again, it's very very hard . |

Have you worked on the riffle cull and if so what have been your results or conclusions on the move? I referring to the in the hands cull as described by MacDougal in Card Mastery and Gamblers Don't Gamble and the Mysterious Kid's riffle cull as described by Vernon. Personally, I think the riffle cull has little practicality, except for demo purposes, but I'm curious as to what your results if any have been with this move. |

Strippers are essentially the prime device for culling/selecting certain cards while riffle shuffling.

You might make a lot of money doing it that way and it certainly is a more practical way to do things. However you will not get the accolades and breathless kudos from the card table intelligentsia and aficionados. So what is more important, getting the money or being admired and revered? Yes, I know it is a tough question for some to answer. |
