There's a magic oriented masterclass that's going to be available from tomorrow for those that subscribe (or want to).
Does anyone know who it is that's done it? I subscribe to the all-access version, mainly for the cooking ones. Will be interesting to see what they do and who it is. Adrian |

I would have hoped someone like you would have been best placed to have that information!

Because you subscribe to the all access version of the site (your words, not mine)! So I would hope you have access to the itinerary and get emails about up and coming events...

Ah, yes, I do. But I only got a teaser email before my post.
It had the subject: You’ll never guess what’s up our sleeve... And a pic of six decks, a ribbon spread and a wand. If someone in the know has not updated by tomorrow, I'll up date this |

Aye, haven't had chance to watch any of it. Bit surprised it's them, in all honesty.

Why? Masterclass has established itself as a platform by hiring the top names in particular fields - Gordon Ramsay to teach cooking, Annie Leibovitz on photography, Martin Scorsese on filmmaking, etc etc.
Are you surprised Masterclass wanted them, or that P&T agreed to do it? No doubt when the Masterclass folks want to enter a new category, and they're pitching their site/platform to a wide general audience, they want to pick people who are famous and well-recognized as being at the top of their field. I'm not surprised for a second that they'd want P&T. If they were willing to make it worthwhile for the duo, and if the guys felt that they could offer a strong class that would be of value to viewers, then I'm not surprised they'd do it either. I'd much rather folks out there get their start from something like this than from videos by a random dude on YouTube.

Not really, I've subscribed to MC since it launched pretty much so am familiar with its format. I guess I meant that despite them aiming for best in field, they got P&T. I would have expected a solo performer I think, but having viewed a bit now, I can see that that wouldn't have worked so well for what P&T have in mind.
Teller speaks in it. |

Looks great. P&T are among the best certainly...
It's pretty rare to my memory that P&T have shared their thinking/ideas in anything like this kind of in depth teaching format. And you get to hear Teller and his lovely deep East coast voice for all the lessons!!! C'mon, who wouldn't pay good money for that?! I can only imagine a course like this can be an overall positive for magic generally. I mean these guys aren't the foremost card/move monkeys or innovators - but they are top Vegas entertainers, EXTREMELY knowledgeable and at the top of our field. The course sounds pretty basic - for those seeking to perhaps go from hobbyist to the next levels.

I have a Masterclass pass (which is worthwhile if you plan to watch a few). I'd summarise this as being introductory, and not worth the cash (if paying for only P&T) for most of the people on this board.
That said, it's a very nice way to spend an hour or two - watching Teller help people learn to do a French Drop, and the tips he offers and the way he teaches is very pleasant. There's some good conversation Not an eye opener for anyone here, though. |

I think it wold be great to get the input from two of the most respected magicians in the business. It's a lot of money though if it only applies to new comers.

Penn discussed this on the two episodes of his podcast this week, and it sounds quite interesting. They discuss how P&T (and Johnny Thompson) spend some of the masterclass breaking down a routine of Piff's that he was having trouble getting to work, and another one where they break down a chop cup routine that Johnny taught Matt Donnely (producer/writer on Fool Us, who is just now learning magic and opening for Piff). Apparently, they completely rip apart Donnely's routine, which sounds like it would be amazing to watch just to see how they critique stuff (hearing Matt discuss what went through his mind was hilarious on the podcast). I haven't signed up yet, but I'd been tempted to for some of the other master classes, and this will probably push me over the edge.

I have had a Masterclass pass for about six months (got it primarily for Daniel Negreanu's poker class. I have watched the full P&T class and I enjoyed it. I would have loved to have seen more depth but it was what I expected for the format (general audience not magicians). My suggestion to anyone considering is to buy a full pass (not just the one class) that way you are not just restricted to the P&T class. Lots of variety on the site.

I just got a Masterclass all-access pass, and I can't recommend it enough for magicians. I haven't watched Penn and Teller yet. There's so much else on the site that will help you as a performer/artist. Watch Steve Martin on performing comedy: everything he says applies to magicians too. Or learn to be a better writer--watch Joyce Carol Oats or James Patterson. Ken Burns lectures on structure, Natalie Portman on improvising a scene...it's all terrific. (And if you need help with your tennis, as I do, try Serena Williams' class.) At this writing, there're offering a a two for one deal.
