Escapologist Jonathan Goodwin is called Magican on BGT
http://thedaredevil.com Even on the ITV show Stephen Mulhern called him a Magician Not to take away anything from his act but I don’t see why I don’t recall him ever doing tricks https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonathan......ologist) Even last year when I saw him it was a pure escape act |

Perhaps because his act last night was not solely what he said he was doing and involved trickery of some kind (I assume)?

Houdini may have something to do with it.

Can not say too much but a few months ago I was at a TV recording
And Matt Johnson was performing an escape which went serious wrong At one strange I thought he would not get through this was serious real nothing was faked Lucky he was ok So also not sure in this day and age why this should be called Magic |

It's probably just the association with Houdini...
I've asked to be banned

My guess is that it's because it's easier to lump several types of performers into the magician category than try to explain to the viewing audience that an escapologist is different than a mentalist is different than an illusionist is different than a close-up performer etc.

We had jugglers and ventriloquists at my local magic club which has always seemed odd to me Gaz 🙂

Hi all
Just came back to Magic Café after a very long time away and saw this post. Martin, I'm sorry for you and the audience that you had to be there to see that. Obviously I cannot say where and when it happened but thank you so much for your thoughts. As many of you know I am and always have been a magician but about 3 years ago started doing escapes. I have always been a fan of escapes and Houdini and even tried escapes in my younger years but did not come back to it until about 3 years ago. I started escapes for personal/family reasons and if you follow my story or see any of the tv shows I have been on you will know what those reasons are. It was never intended to be just another thing in my show. I have been very fortunate to gain lots of exposure and tv time doing escapes and for that I will always be very grateful. My take on this is that magicians are not simply escape artists by association. They are arts that have always been closely linked and obviously Houdini was both a magician and an escape artist. However, in my opinion, to call an escape artist simply a magician is doing the art of escapes a disservice and vice versa. The term to me Escape Artist is exactly that, an ARTIST who chooses escapes as his or her medium. To be an artist is to be someone skilled at a particular task or occupation and to be skilled at escapes, really skilled you have to work hard at it, just like magic. As Martin mentioned, I had a very serious accident however this does not mean I am not very skilled and very studied in my art. If I wasn't the accident could have been much worse! If anyone out there is considering doing escapes then treat it, like anything you undertake with the respect it deserves. You can be a magician and an escape artist at the same time as I am but the two are not mutually exclusive. Just my thoughts Best MJ |
