I seem to remember reading somewhere that you can vanish a large silk by having a smaller one in a thumb tip and
doing some kind of switch. I can’t remember the details. I will work on re-constructing this myself but if anyone knows a Method, can you please let me know? Thank you.

Again...how big is the silk that you want to vanish???
Burling Hull "invented" a method, for vanishing an 18" silk, perhaps a hundred years ago. It is seldom seen because of the difficulty of the handling. I have worked out a technique, that is much easier than Hull's. I wrote it up in my book. You can see it on my dvd which shows two school shows. I used it for years in my school shows. It might be possible to do it with a 24", but, I've never tried one that big. PM me if you like.

I vanish a 36" silk in a Switch Can (aka Merry Switch Can) in my show.
So, I use a prop instead of a barehanded approach. - Donald

This was sold by Rice Silk King Studio, don't remember if it in the Encyclopedia of Silk Magic or not. "The Elusive Silk" effect has been out of stock for years. It can be made using the Vernet finger tips, not TT. Not many use it because it does require sleight of hand. It is full routine of a vanish and reappearance of a 18 inch silk. I have used it in combination with another effect.

Mt favorite 18" silk vanish routine is my Coin Bottle vanish combined with a small Drawer Box, as described in Vanishing Silk Gimmicks in Dollar Store Magic Book2-03 https://www.magicnook.com/dollarstoreMagic/DS02-03.htm . I start with the drawer box, open it and remove the coin bottle which contains the 18" silk. I open the coin bottle and put the cap in my pocket. I then close the drawer box and do some knot tricks with the silk. Then I open up the drawer box again (this is one of those small plastic locking drawer boxes available at most magic stores) and take out the coin bottle. I stuff the 18" silk back into the bottle and get a spectator to help me push it in. The spectator holds the bottle up high while I get the cap from my pocket (wink-wink!). The spectator screws on the cap and holds onto the bottle while I show everyone that the drawer box is now empty. I do the snippity-snap move, making the silk vanish from the coin bottle (which the spectator opens and checks to make sure it is really gone), the I let the spectator open the drawer box to find the missing 18" silk inside. I use distinctive Rice decorated 18" silk for this just so it is easily recognizable for a vanish and reappearance. So there's a method for the missing Powell and a place to go for more information if he is still interested.

For an 18" silk a Hank Ball works nicely. They are easier to use than one might think and work well for those with hands too small to hide a Palmo.

I'm with Mary and Frank on this one. Hank Ball is a great way to vanish a 24" silk.
Couple of examples in the clip below. Check it out, only a minute of your time https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsrDIB3cuF4 Not a huge amount of material out there on it's use but IMHO it's a fantastic little prop. |

Now that Morrissey Magic is out of business, hank balls are hard to find. I don't know if any place to obtain a Hank Ball today. This gimmick is used more for a large silk productions. The book My Best has a full silk production using the hank ball with illustrations. Abbott's Magic sold this handing in manuscript form for years. Check their website.
The original poster Powell has not been back to the Café since he posted his question. I believe Powell was referring to Silk King Studio's Elusive Silk gimmick and routine. I suggest you contact Silk King studio and see if they will sell you the instructions. With them and a Vernet F.T. you could recreate the effect. |

Dollar Tree has hank balls in stock in a variety of sizes. Of course to most people they look like plastic toys for playing ball, but with a razor knife, a bit of invsible sewing thread and a brown magic marker for coloring, and instructions from Hoffmann, you are all set to go. The originator of the Stillwell ball made his from hollow rubber balls from toy shops, too.

Magic flea markets and estate sales are a good place to find a hank ball. If you go with a silk Magician they can let you know about all sorts of dye tubes and such that you might not be familiar with. Bring an old silk of your preferred size with you to see if the ball or tube will accommodate.
Be sure to check inside and out for corrosion and rough edges on the holes. Buff with emory cloth and cover issues with layers of finger nail polish. Check your final fix with an old silk first. -Mary Mowder |

You can make a hank ball grippy or change the color (not as part of the performance) using the tip end of a balloon animal balloon.
I handles a little differently but there are advantages. I haven't found the best application for this yet but it is fun to play with. =Mary Mowder |

The obvious use for a brightly colored ball is for use as in Rice's "Douglas 20th Century" but you can also use them as loads for a Cups and Balls routine with appearing and disappearing silks interwoven in the act.

I learned from my mentor, the late Roy Mayer, in the '40s. Roy, and I use(d) a TT. I simplified the handling. It's in my book. I use it to vanish the "rainbow" silk in T. The Fujiwara Ball Gimmick is a Hank Ball made of soft plastic/rubber.
It offers some unique handling possibilities. Vanish & produce a 24" silk. I use it. https://www.vanishingincmagic.com/magic/......gimmick/ . |

One of the easiest and SAFE way to vanish a silk is in the Silk to EGG Routine! I must use it in half my shows.
The ceramic gimmicked egg I use will accept a 24" square silk! Give it a try. (This also the way I vanish 6 sponge balls at the end of that routine.) |
