24" is the only size to use.

It's just the right size for either version (reel or reel-less).

I have used an 18" silk for YEARS, and, it works just fine. On school tours, I did 350 to 400 programs per year.

I have also done the trick with an 18" silk, as well as a woman's silk scarf (long and rectangular), a polyester sash, a cotton bandana, a length of rope dyed black to appear to be a microphone wire, and a piece of cheesecloth. The question was simply, is 24" too big? But most of the time, I used a 24" silk because it was the silk used in a complete silk routine, in which passing it through a microphone stand was just one part of the routine. So in turn, I should question: what ELSE did you do with the silk BEFORE and AFTER you pulled it through a microphone stand? Each of those different items I have used was part of some routine with that particular item.

Jim... I use it in my "illusion" routine, to illustrate "illusion".
