Many thanks to Mike for letting me have this to review. What a gem!
Plots and Methods is a very interesting set of offbeat methods to perform miracles with virtually no sleights. If you can hold a break and do a biddle steal you're in good shape. Most of the effort is in the performance and keeping track of what you need to do. One trick requires you to split the deck evenly and do a faro shuffle, but more and more I'm finding tricks that make the faro worth learning. People spend time learning false shuffles -- spend the time learning to faro and you can do real shuffles in some cases! Much of this work revolves around forces that don't remotely seem like forces. Quite the opposite, they will come across as extremely fair and random to the audience. With some thought, you will be able to develop your own effects using the principles you learn here. All In: John Bannon meets Think Nguyen. A Bannon Paint It Blank-type effect is presented as an exercise in pure luck or skill using Think-style estimation. The spectators shuffle the deck, fairly select a card, and bury it in the deck. The spectators can even cut two normal jokers face up into the deck together. And with a single shuffle, the selected card (which is easily reframed as a thought of card) appears between the jokers. Lucky You: Something of a CAAN effect. Once again the spectators shuffle the deck, select a card, and you bury it. They jumble up a bunch of numbers which they further randomize and then add the numbers up. And *they* can deal down to the selected number from the deck that you haven't touched since before the numbers were shuffled. This is a very strong CAAN effect. R.M.: This is a card to impossible location. Through a very fair process, one of a dozen cards is indirectly selected. It is found to have disappeared from the packet and can appear anywhere you want it to. This is constructed very nicely -- the card cannot be signed, but based on the way it is selected it would make no sense for it to be signed. Very clever. Three+One: I generally dislike spelling tricks. I find them overly procedural and boring. This is not. You shuffle a packet of cards, give them to two spectators and never touch them again. They control the cards as they spell short words that they have thought of, and in so doing completely randomize the packet in a way that you could not possibly have predicted. And yet they have achieved an impossible coincidence. This requires some setup but is absolutely worth it. I would suggest that using Blake Vogt's Number 4 Envelope could reduce some setup and provide additional advantages. Polish Poker Stacking: This is how Polish Poker was meant to be performed. Sure it's cool that 5 randomly selected cards form the highest named poker rank. But there are many effects demonstrating impossible poker-dealing skill. How many of them let you deal out 4 rounds of 5-card stud, let the spectator name a rank, and then deal out the 5th card, showing that you have the strongest version of that rank? This looks like something Jason Ladanye or Darwin Ortiz would do. And let this be a jumping-off point for you to create or adapt your favorite version of a poker deal trick. Note: you need to buy Polish Poker separately to do this one. Get this booklet. Now! |

I only read the first two tricks in Mike's book so far but really thought they were great. I did a video on my you tube channel of Lucky You for those who would like to see it. In Mike's book he uses blank business cards for his number prediction at the end but I did with playing cards. Index cards could also be used if desired.

Thanks for the video, Tony!
As I've mentioned in our talk, as an author, I publish my preferred way of presenting everything. But, once the material is "out there", one can present it however he wants, really. I will use business cards as this suits me best, but you can use poker chips, coins and so on. The published material is now "ours" so let's have fun with it! Mike |

I got this book and I am really happy. I am enjoying R.M. very very much, is a simple method, but the plot gives a lot of space for a interesting script. I still gotta try better the rest of effects but already very happy with the booklet.

I also have read through this book and really enjoyed it. I posted a review over in the books section, to hopefully catch the eye of some of the book guys. Very enjoyable work, and I look forward to more from Michal.
And magicthree, thanks for posting the video. That's my favorite item from the book, and I'm intending to try it out in performance shortly. |

A wonderful book by Mr. Kociolek! I've used the R.M. routine now and have adapted it to modern story line. Mr. K. suggests a murder theme, but if you perform for mixed ages as I do, I will use the "The Bachelor " theme, from the TV reality show. The spectator will select the bachelor (and also his mate), and they will live happily ever after. Also: if you do not have an extra queen of hearts as suggested, you can palm off the QH and place in your pocket for the finale. I really like this routine, as it's modern and it's not a pick a card; plus it has some drama.I look forward to playing with rest of his material. Thanks Vanishing Inc. for republishing great material!

Plots and Methods by Michal Kociolek
This is a new release in ebook that was kindly sent to me for review from Michal. 43 pages, with illustrations and proper credits. Overall, Michal has done an excellent job of clearly explaining all of the effects. If you like cards, there is something here for everyone. I shall briefly cover each effect ALL IN - You must do perfect faros to do this effect. It is a winner, and will fool everyone. Deck is portioned out to four specs and each shuffles their cards, and then gathered, after one spec freely selects one of his cards, then cuts his cards losing it. Two face-up jokers are dropped atop deck, spec cuts and then you do a faro shuffle. Spec's card is trapped between the two Jokers. This fooled me. LUCKY YOU - Specs shuffle deck, a card is freely chosen and lost. Deck is placed on table and not touched by performer again. Six pieces of paper each have different single-digit numbers written on each side. Spec mixes them face up and face down in every way and drops them to table. He adds up a total of whatever six numbers he ends up with for a total. Spec picks up deck and deals down to that freely chosen total and finds their card at that exact number! No displacements, no equivoque, no outs! This is a killer effect, and also my favorite - one that I will start performing immediately! This effect alone, is worth the price of the book! R.M. (Locked Room Mystery) - You remove the 12 picture cards from your deck. You also have an envelope with a prediction inside that spec can hold. (No switches necessary) Spec freely decides which face card will be the MURDERER and which will be the VICTIM. Michal's "selection process" is very clever! In the end, you divine the name of the murderer, but when the spec announces the name of the victim - the victim is not found, and has gone missing from the 12 face cards. Spec now opens the envelope and discovers the victim inside! Easy to do. Great impact! I like this a lot! I will use this! THREE + ONE - This is a "spelling trick" with a kicker ending that many will like. Set-up and preparation will take some effort, and a gaffed card is required. It is a fooler, but not my cup of tea. POLISH POKER STACKING - This effect requires specially-printed gaff cards. Beautiful handling and effect, but you must purchase the gaffs, so I will not go into further detail. But a great effect! All in all, this is a really nice addition to the magic community library, and I highly recommend it to beginners, intermediate and expert level card men. Definitely worth the asking price! Get this. You will not be disappointed! I look forward to more creations by Michal in the future! Doug Canning |

If you know Japanese, here are the three reviews of the booklet that I've found:
http://magic300.com/plots-methods/ http://greenware-ex.blogspot.com/2019/12......oek.html http://closeupmagictohoku.blog.fc2.com/blog-entry-614.html You can use Google Translate (although it struggles a bit with the translations) to see they're all very positive! Also, the booklet is listed in the "Magic tricks to buy this year (2019)" post: http://magic300.com/best2019/ Mike |
