Hi
I only started in magic about 4 months ago and one of the first books I bought was Bobo's Modern Coin Magic. I am currently stuck on page 5 with the back palm! Is this something everyone can do with practice - or do some people just have to accept their hands are too small/big or their fingers are too fat/thin/long/short etc? Whenever I try to do this back palm my fingers rarely manage to hold onto the coin and look so contorted that no one will be fooled if I miraculousy make a coin appear out of thin air. I am willing to keep trying with this back palm despite little progress in 4 months - but if this is not to be then so be it. TonyTax

Hey Tony... I'm right there with you
Click Here! I'm just going to learn other methods of backpalming and skip that one. |

You might want to try using Tenkai pinch to replace the back palm.

Hi,
I learnt the back palm of a coin when I was young and I can still just about perform it. However, I have never really seen anyone use it. I would say it is not top of the useful coin sleight list in my opinion. Phillip |

Either find a coin that works or just use a back finger clip.

Just keep on trying it! You will get it! Hardly anyone does a Miser's Dream anymore and it's such a shame too! It's the same with card manip! Keep on trying! You can do it! It just takes loads of practice.

If you think Bobo is intimidating, be sure not to read The Art Of magic by T Nelson Downs! I know Downs was a great coin manipulator, but he really knows how to make a guy feel inadequate. This is from the book's introduction (things get more difficult later on in the book!)
"He is a very ordinary performer who, in this age, cannot conceal a dozen or fifteen coins in his hand and pluck them singly from the palm to produce in a fan at the fingertips..." (he then goes on to remark upon how easy it is to conceal 35 to 40 coins in the hand!) Me, I have problems enough with one coin at a time. Switching quickly and smoothly between front palm and back palm and all the other types of palm I find just about impossible. Still, there's quite a lot of good stuff you can do with just one or two palmed coins, so I'm not losing sleep. best wishes Huw |

Huw,
Don't be so intimidated by Downs' Art of Magic; it's almost certain he didn't write it, even though his name is on it. There are a number of things in the book that Downs didn't and couldn't do (and nobody can!). And there are a number of things that Downs did that aren't in the book (for example, the coins he used in his coin star were ground down to be concave, to improve the balance -- but the book doesn't tell you that.) As for the back palm, Phillip has it right: Has anyone ever seen it used, even though some may be able to do it? I haven't. And Tony, don't worry about being stuck on something in Bobo; just skip it and go on. One of the good things about Bobo is that the book is written in such a way that it's not essential to know each part before you go on to the next. He gives alternative handlings and routines. cheers, Peter Marucci showtimecol@aol.com |
