This is an experiment using the 16 binary vowel words to see if I can use the same words with my standard quad chart of letters. If I am successful then I will have two completely different methods to determine which one of the 16 words they are thinking of! Note that both methods are very easy to do.
Later scroll down to about the 3rd post in this thread to see the updated charts. First I'm going to evaluate every letter in each word as to where it happens to fall on my standard quad alphabet chart and then see if I have any existing patterns that perhaps will fit 70% of the words against the quad chart and if so then change a few words so that it will fit the quad chart method and still meet the criteria for the binary vowels food versus non food chart (ie: still maintaining a vowel or not in the second and fourth letter and having a curved capital letter in the third position when the word is the first of the two paired words). Note the numbers following each word below indicate where on the quad chart the corresponding letter falls. The reason I'm posting the numbers for all five letters is to see if I have a good pattern on say the third and fourth letter instead of the first and second letters, if so then I could use those two letters instead of the first and second letter. Note that a "?" below Indicates a letter that is not a quadrant letter (a neutral letter) therefore if its position is used it will have to be addressed. EGGS 3113--- GRITS 12133 WOOD ?442--- SAND 3242 CORN 2424--- OATS 4233 SHOE 3443--- CHAIR 24212 OKRA 4?22--- FRIES 12133 LASER 12332--- LAVA 12?2 PECAN 43224--- MELON 13144 STONE 33443--- GLASS 11233 Reminder that the 16 words above are set up to fit the binary vowel scheme and not to fit the quad chart method. So now the challenge is to make those 16 words work for both methods (kind of like Cinderella's step-sisters trying to get their foot to fit in the glass slipper). The above 16 words all are a very poor fit to the quad chart. For example the first letter of each word the distribution is 6 quadrant 1 words, 2 quadrant 2 words, 4 quadrant 3 words (that's good), 3 quadrant four words and 1 question mark. The ideal should be 4 occurrences for each. I have tried many other combinations and none have a very good fit initially therefore I will either have to change a lot of the words (don't want to do that because that could mess up the binary vowel scheme) or maybe I can change the placement of the letters on the quad chart to fit the words I have. Actually (using the first two characters of the word) the words "eggs sand shoe Stone" happen to work perfectly with the existing quad chart (they all happen to start in the third quadrant (alphabet chart) and their second letter all happen to hit in a different alphabet chart quadrant! Yesss!). Okay I'm going to play with the first two letters and see if I can get maybe a 50% initial hit. First quadrant possible words: GRITS 12 FRIES 12 LASER 12 LAVA 12 MELON 13 GLASS 11 Let's use glass laser melon and reject grits fries and lava. Therefore we have covered 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, but we're missing 1-4. Second quadrant possible words: CORN 24 CHAIR 24 Let's use chair and reject corn. Therefore we have covered 2-4 but we're missing 2-1, 2-2, 2-3. Third quadrant words (good as is): EGGS 31 SAND 32 STONE 33 SHOE 34 Fourth quadrant possible words: OATS 42 OKRA 4? PECAN 43 Let's use oats and pecan and reject okra. Therefore we have covered 4-2 and 4-3, but we're missing 4-1 and 4-4. To sum up using the first two letters against my existing quad chart: we have 10 usable words and 6 rejects that we would have to replace the word or modify the quad chart to make them work or do a little bit of both ie: change say two of the six words and change perhaps 4 letters on the quad chart positions. The words below with the asterisk in front are the words that do not fit the current quad chart because they have a duplicate pattern of another word (or in the case of "wood" and "okra" they have a non quadrant letter): EGGS 31 --- *GRITS 12 *WOOD ?4 --- SAND 32 *CORN 24 --- OATS 42 SHOE 34 --- CHAIR 24 *OKRA 4? --- *FRIES 12 LASER 12 --- *LAVA 12 PECAN 43 --- MELON 13 STONE 33 --- GLASS 11 Replace or adjust the below rejected words so they will work with the quad chart: GRITS 1-2 FRIES 1-2 LAVA 1-2 CORN 2-4 OKRA 4-? WOOD ?-4 The number after the dash indicates the row number of the word within the four quadrant words within the same quadrant. Reminder that the quad method requires 2 charts glued back to back. The first chart appears to be a "jumbled" bunch of the letters of the alphabet. The second chart is a two-column list of the 16 words (8 words in one column and 8 words in the second column) what we are talking about right here is the two column list of the 16 words. The first four words in the first column comprise quadrant one, the first four words in the second column comprise quadrant 2, the last four words in column 1 comprise quadrant 3, the last four words in the second column comprise quadrant 4. Therefore we need to make the six rejected words work for the following: Quadrant 1 row 4 Quadrant 2 row 1 Quadrant 2 row 2 Quadrant 2 row 3 Quadrant 4 row 1 Quadrant 4 row 4 Replaceable swappable movable letters (unused by the existing 16 vowel words in position 1 and 2) letters: B I U N D R F Therefore I can play around with the above letters on the "jumbled" alphabet letter chart and not affect the existing words. OK, think I have it solved.
To make the following positions on the quad word chart viable we need: 1-4 on the quad alphabet chart swap the R and the N to make GRITS work 2-1 on the quad word chart replace LAVA with NIKE or DIKE or DIME or DINE or DIVOT DIVER DINO CIVIC CIVIL CINAMON or SWAP "I" and "U" to allow DUKE or DUNE or keep LAVA and replace LASER with NICAD (a LAVA lamp powered by a NICAD battery). I'm going to keep LASER and replace LAVA with DINO (a time traveler has a LASER gun to shoot a DINO T-Rex). 2-2 on the quad alphabet chart swap the new N with F to make FRIES work 2-3 on the quad word chart replace WOOD with RUST or DUST 4-1 for OKRA: on the quad alphabet chart replace all K with B also put K into old B position. 4-4 on the quad word chart change CORN to PORK |

I have done preliminary tests and they all look good but I do need to do a complete 100% test of all scenarios and will post when completed. But for now here are the updated charts to be able to use the 16 words via the quad method or via the binary vowels method. Note that you would only need one document to carry (has the quad letters on one side and the quad words on the other side).
New charts: Quad jumbled alphabet that spectator looks at when doing the quad method: F A X Z W Y J M N L D C J ? ? ? ? ? G K I X Y W ? ? ? ? ? Z B J V B Z ? ? ? ? ? X V Y Y J W ? ? ? ? ? B J Z O P V X Z J Y W S T R H Q J W B X Z U E Quad word chart in perfect quadrant order. This chart can be shown to the spectator when doing the quad method or when doing the binary vowels method: GLASS ----- DINO LASER ----- FRIES MELON ----- DUST GRITS ----- CORN EGGS ----- OKRA SAND ----- OATS STONE ----- PECAN SHOE ----- PORK When using the quad method the magician needs to see the above chart after the first two letters are "sent" by The spectator. Binary vowels chart that magician has memorized: 1 EGGS --- GRITS 2 DUST --- SAND 3 PORK --- OATS 4 SHOE --- CHAIR 5 OKRA --- FRIES 6 LASER --- DINO 7 PECAN --- MELON 0 STONE --- GLASS The mnemonic memorization of the binary vowels method: 1 first thing in the morning have EGGS and GRITS at a restaurant. 2 at two in the afternoon go for a stroll on a DUSTy boardwalk and look at the SAND beach. 3 at 3 in the afternoon go to Kansas or Nebraska and play baseball using a real long PORK Subway sandwich bat and a ball made out of OATS and hit the ball striking the number three on a giant clock on the right field fence. 4 the number four looks like an upside down chair but the chair is sitting in a giant shoe inside the Nike store ie: SHOE CHAIR. 5 at five o'clock with Oprah have a late lunch at a restaurant serving OKRA and french FRIES. 6 at six o clock a time traveler with a LASER six gun revolver shoots them at 6 DINOsaurs. 7 seven days a week farm workers pick PECAN and MELON crops in the West Texas panhandle. 8 ate STONE and GLASS material on a Frank Lloyd Wright House. Or if using binary total of zero then think 0 degree temperature snowman at the North Pole where Santa Claus has a Frank Lloyd Wright House made of STONE and GLASS. |

Note that the whole bunch of question marks in the middle of the quad alphabet chart is where I have a spiral rectangle that is somewhat hypnotic looking, but you could put whatever strange looking image you want there or maybe a picture of a famous magician's face or your face.

You could do the effect 3 times as follows:
Spectator thinks of a word on the quad chart then looks at the first two letters on the other side of the chart and the magician reveals the thought of word (by seeing which two quadrants they looked at). This effect is done a second time (spectator thinks of another word and magician reveals the word using the quad method again). Third effect: this time tell them "let's try this again but this time after you're thinking of another word I want you to remember how to spell your word and then set the chart aside and close your eyes and just concentrate on your word". Then you proceed to use the binary vowels method (you ask them 3 equivoque type questions and reveal their thought of word by means of the memorized mnemonic words - see my post "Binary vowels 16 words" note: if the second letter is a vowel you mentally add 2, if the fourth letter is vowel add 4 and add 1 if the word is a food). |

I found one mistake. The word FRIES will not work on the quad word chart because I moved the letter "R" to a different quadrant on the quad alphabet chart. The solution is simple. I found another word that will work perfectly on the quad word chart and on the vowels chart It's the word CAKE therefore replace the word FRIES with the word CAKE in the charts and in the mnemonic story.

Oops, the word CAKE works on the the quad words chart but does not entirely work on the binary vowels method. Because of the movement of the letter "R" to make another word work on the binary quad alphabet chart this required to find a word to replace FRIES.
I thought that the word CAKE would work but unfortunately the second letter of CAKE is a vowel which in this case must NOT be a vowel. The other 15 words all work on both charts. I have just this one position word to fill properly. The criteria for this word position are: 1. The first two letters of the word must be from the upper left corner of the quad alphabet chart ie: currently F A D C 2. To meet the binary vowels criteria: The second letter of the word must be a consonant. 3. The third letter of the word can be a consonant or a vowel but must NOT have a curve in the letter ie: must be one of the following: A E F H I K L M N T V W X Y Z 4. The fourth letter must be a vowel. 5. The word must be a food. I have done a lot of searching and trial and error and the only word that I can find that meets the above criteria is the word ACKEE which is the national fruit of Jamaica which virtually nobody has heard of but it's my best solution for now therefore instead of using the word FRIES or CAKE use the word ACKEE in all the charts. During performance (before the spectator thinks of a word) I could talk about ACKEE being a Jamaican fruit that can only be eaten when ripe otherwise it can be deadly. This done just to get them acquainted with this new word (which means they probably will not mentally select it because I called attention to it). But if they do select ACKEE then that will diminish the effect because the rest of the audience will think that I just forced it on them by suggestion so maybe just NOT talking about ACKEE is the best solution. There may be another word / letter solution but it may take considerable rearrangement because if you move one letter on the alphabet chart to satisfy a word you can negatively affect other words. Kind of like the whack-a-mole game where you hit one mole on the head to knock him down and then another mole or two pop's their head up. |

Another solution could be to replace the word FRIES with another word that is already on the chart so that word appears twice. Example of using the word STONE twice:
GLASS ----- DINO LASER ----- STONE MELON ----- DUST GRITS ----- CORN EGGS ----- OKRA SAND ----- OATS STONE ----- PECAN SHOE ----- PORK Note that the word STONE is in quadrant 2 row 2 and is also in quadrant 3 row 3. The interesting thing about this solution is that even though the spectator may have mentally chosen the word STONE from quadrant 2 row 2 the signals that he sends via the alphabet chart will lead the magician to quadrant 3 row 3 which is fine! If anybody out there has another solution to the criteria for this remaining word please post it. Thanks! glowball yelnif |

Another possibility is the word ADZUKI (an Asian bean) works for binary vowels and works in quadrant 2 row 2 of the quad word chart.

The word ACTIN is a protein and fits all the criteria to fill the spot for FRIES however it would probably fail 1 equivoque criteria because the spectator would probably not know that it is a protein a food. On the plus side sense it is an unknown word the spectator would probably never pick it.

Another oops. On the quad word chart I erroneously have the word corn when it should be CHAIR.

Still working on a good solution to replace the word FRIES:
If we move the B or the N to the upper left corner of the quad alphabet chart the below words work on the quad chart but will have a problem with the equivoque on the food criteria. ANTEATER ANTELOPE ANTIBODY ABLED ANTACID |
glowball Special user Nashville TN 832 Posts |
Still trying to replace the word FRIES:
Below FL words rely on moving the L from the upper right quadrant to the upper left quadrant of the quad alphabet chart. The word FLIES fails the food criteria but could work if the equivoque question was "is associated with food?" The wording is not the best equivoque because it needs the awkward word "isn't". FLOUR fails the third curved letter criteria FLOAT fails the third curved letter criteria FLEECE fails the food criteria but could work if we change the equivoque question to "this isn't a farm product is it?" The other 7 food words MELON GRITS EGGS OKRA OATS PECAN PORK should also pass that test. Well this could be confusing to a spectator because they might also think that STONE SAND DUST is produced by a farm. |

I think the best solution is to move the letter N to the upper left on the quad alphabet chart and use the word ANTACID (not FRIES) on the quad word chart and change the equivoque question from food to "it isn't something that you eat or swallow is it?".
That way even though antacid is not a food it would qualify as something you swallow. I think this would be very clear to the spectator and they would not think that stone sand or dust is something you would normally swallow therefore we should get the correct response. I'll have my charts updated and shown on my next post. |

Final improved charts:
I wish I had a better word than ADLUH (a flour for making grits) but it was the only word I could find with all the criteria to fit that position on the chart however technically everything works. Quad jumbled alphabet that spectator looks at when doing the quad method: F A J Z W Y J M N L D X V ? ? ? ? ? G K I Z Y W ? ? ? ? ? Z B J V B Z ? ? ? ? ? X V Y Y J W ? ? ? ? ? B J Z O P Q X Z J Y W S T R C H J W B X Z U E The question marks are where I have the rectangular hypnotic spiral. The below Quad word chart (glued/attached to the above letter chart) is in perfect quadrant order. You may have to explain to the spectators that ADLUH is a type of grits so that when you use the binary vowels method they can properly answer the question "this isn't a food is it?" in case they choose adluh. This chart can be shown to the spectator when doing the quad method or when doing the binary vowels method (the magician must be able to see this chart when using the quad method (first two letters) makes it super simple no memorization involved): GLASS ----- FILE LASER ----- ADLUH MELON ----- DUST GRITS ----- ARMOUR EGGS ----- OKRA TANKS ----- OATS STONE ----- PECAN SHOE ----- CORN Binary vowels method chart that magician has memorized: 1 EGGS --- GRITS 2 DUST --- TANKS 3 CORN --- OATS 4 SHOE --- ARMOUR 5 OKRA --- ADLUH 6 LASER --- FILE 7 PECAN --- MELON 0 STONE --- GLASS The mnemonic memorization of the binary vowels method: 1 first thing in the morning have EGGS and GRITS at a restaurant. 2 at two in the afternoon go to Ft Campbell and look at all the DUST that the TANKS have made. 3 at 3 in the afternoon go to Iowa and play baseball using a real long CORN cob bat and a ball made out of OATS and hit the ball striking the number three on a giant clock on the right field fence. 4 on the golf course yelling "four" is a knight in shining armor with a giant shoe that has armor on it ie: SHOE ARMOUR. 5 at five o'clock with Oprah have a late lunch at a restaurant serving OKRA with ADLUH. 6 at six o clock a time traveler with a LASER six gun revolver shoots them at a giant FILE. Use a direct equivoque on this one "you aren't thinking of laser are you?" 7 seven days a week farm workers pick PECAN and MELON crops in Texas panhandle. 0 think 0 degree temperature snowman at the North Pole where Santa Claus has a Frank Lloyd Wright House made of STONE and GLASS. If any of you try this please post your experience thanks! glowball yelnif |

Here is another combined method:
Quad Scheme 1-2 and binary vowels (has 8 animal words): MINK ----------- SKUNK KEEP ----------- ESCAPE RABBIT -------- VAPOR YODLE --------- SPELL TIGER ---------- GRIZZLY UNION --------- CLOTH ADDER -------- OTTER DOVES -------- GONE Note that the below letter chart is in a different order than my prior posts. L E V Z X W J X M R S N F ? ? ? ? ? Y I K Z X J ? ? ? ? ? Z B J J B Z ? ? ? ? ? X J W W J X ? ? ? ? ? B X Z O G Q W Z J W X D T P C H J W B X Z U A Print off the above and put a hypnotic spiral or a picture of Houdini where the question marks are. Note the magician has the above two charts glued back to back and shows it to the spectator, the below chart only exists in the magician's mind (he has the rows memorized). Binary vowels (a e I o you y) scheme (the magician has a spectator think of a word and then concentrate on each of the first four letters one at a time as the magician asks questions and secretly mentally adds 2 if second letter is a vowel, adds 4 if fourth letter is a vowel, adds 1 if the whole word is an animal, use the first word of pair if the third (capital) letter has a curve): 1. SKUNK GRIZZLY 2. YODLE KEEP 3. RABBIT MINK 4. ESCAPE UNION 5. ADDER OTTER 6. VAPOR GONE 7. TIGER DOVE 0. CLOTH SPELL |
