You better not let the Knights who say “Ni!” find out about that.

This thread is a breath of fresh air.
Thanks gents, due to all the trusted opinions and thoughts here, I picked this up. My first impression is I really like it. Immediate material aside, Chris Jones is interesting and personable, which made for a fun watch. Looking forward to working on it and taking it out. Phedon, stop picking on those freaky beard wearing tattoo'd mentalists, they're sensitive. You're one drunken weekend in Thailand away from becoming one yourself Side note; On the off chance you're reading this, and don't have anything/everything Phedon releases, do yourself a favor and correct that. Talk about ****ing excellence. I think he was created in a top secret mentalism lab.
Look for all the world like you're counting the brain cells in his cranium.

"Good pieces of “Prop-less Mentalism” are so hard to come by",
Very true. " finding a reliable method that is not long winded and doesn’t require lots of memory work is near impossible." True. But time dedicated to memory work is usually time well spent. "Hell, it is as elusive as capturing the ‘Loch Ness Monster’ I honestly believe I’ve captured the ‘Holy Grail’." A modest claim! "It’s simple and elegant" Simple, yes. Elegant, hmmm... " – your audience can think of a word, a name, a playing card, country, colour in-fact they can choose the category and you can tell them exactly what they’re thinking with ease". No, they can't. You ask them to think of a playing card, then -after more steps- direct them to either think of a name, or a word within a category they choose, based on the playing card they are thinking of. "No memory work required… " Very little memory work required. True. "No weird process… " False. Thinking of a playing card, a number, potentially a second playing card, a category and a word - none of which are related to one another -is the very definition of weird. "No ambiguity… " Anyone paying attention to the effect will unambiguously be able to take a pretty good guess at the thought of name before the performer reveals it. "If you wanted to look like you can genuinely read minds here’s your solution" It strikes me as a less than ideal solution. A fundamentally illogical, poorly explored release that should have been workshopped properly to iron out the glaring flaws. "I believe I’ve captured the elusive Beast" You've certainly created a monster. But it's not Nessie, it's more Frankenstein's monster: a rather crudely stitched together beast, made up of various mismatched parts from other places. Price: £20. Apparently this is now considered "cheap". Derren Brown's 'Pure Effect' was £25 and for that you received a full self-published book of multiple effects containing 'Reminiscence', 'Lift' and a full manifesto on invisible compromise that helped to give birth to modern prop-less Mentalism. This effect would have been an acceptable entry in a longer book or worth a punt for about $10 as a possible springboard for a more elegant solution based on this collection of other people's principles. |

I agree with Martin. I feel this release is a bit at odds with itself.
I've asked to be banned

Very interesting thoughts, Martin. Always a joy to read your analysis. Thanks for sharing. I’m curious: what is your favourite propless release? (If you have one, of course.) If I remember Pete T impressed you with a name divination, right?

I thought of my childhood friend, Richard. He told me I was thinking of the name Richard. That simple. That direct. It felt like real mind-reading. Maybe he simply got lucky? Certainly his commercially released name guess requires a fair degree of luck. All I know is it was an extraordinary experience. I suspect that, even as a civilian, the effect would have been seriously diluted if I had first thought of a playing card and a number and then been restricted to a choice of name not personal to me. But who can say for certain? Maybe Nessie exists? |

Having worked through Propness more, I have the same feelings and reservations with it, but Martin did a much better job of explaining it!!
