Hey, guys, I'm building a blammo box to change whatever into a rabbit. My question is should I make the box out of 1/4 plywood or 3/8 plywood. The base, I'm going to make out of 1/2 inch. But the sides and the gimmick are what I'm wondering about. I was afraid that the 3/8 panels would be so heavy that when they swing down they would really make a racket, bang into the stand holding it up, etc. What do you think?
The box is roughly 16 inches square and about 10 inches high. Thanks! Jim

You should try to use no thicker plywood then 3/8" when building small illusions. It keeps the weight down. If the sides are hinged then use the rubber bumpers sold in hardware stores. They come in clear or black and have sticky backs. You can also find bumpers that screw in.
For a small box like you are making 1/4" sides are okay. To control warping, paint both side the same day. |

I have a full-size blammo, and the sides are made from 1/4" marine plywood. Light as a feather, but sturdy.

Thanks, guys. Donald, about what size is your "full-size" blammo? As mine is 16 inches square and will be holding a rabbit, I guess 1/4 sounds like it will be fine.

Hello James,
I'm pretty sure that Donald is referring to the full-size Blammo illusion used to make a person appear. The smaller versions, originated by George Kimery of Chalet Magic, are either a Silk to Rabbit or Doves to Rabbit. The Silk to Rabbit I owned was made with 1/4" tempered hardboard (Masonite®.) Tempered hardboard is smooth on both sides and makes a great surface for a painted finish. |

Yes, full-size means to produce a lovely human assistant!
Mine is 26"x35" size base, with panels that are 22" high. This is not including the legs. My point was that if 1/4" marine plywood could be used for the side panels of a human-sized blammo, then it can be used for bunny-sized blammo. - Donald.

Yes, the 1/4 multiply plywood will be more than strong enough for doves to rabbit or whatever. Just be sure to properly paint the surfaces to minimize warping.
I used 1/4 plywood on my Dove Pyramid.

Thanks, again, guys. I'm using baltic birch plywood. So will go with the 1/4.
Richard, what is a Dove Pyramid? Donald, what thickness plywood is the base of your human-sized blammo? Just curious. Jim

My base is about 6" deep. I guess more of a platform. You can't tell at a glance, because the side panels cover half of the depth (when up or down). Probably mostly because of the length of the leg sockets, but there are other reasons for the depth. PM me for details if you really want to know.

Dove pyramid is a transformation of a pyramid that takes a dove into it into a 25 bloom botania.

Thanks, Richard.
Donald, I will PM you tonight. The only part of the design I haven't finalized yet is the catch for the gimmick. I want to make a catch so that the box can be transported in the "down" position, if you know what I mean. And then, the gimmick can be set while the box is already assembled. Any ideas? Thanks. Jim
