The subscribe feature somehow does not work for me. I already subscribed to a couple of threads on the Café, but I do not receive any notifications in my email Inbox. Are there maybe any settings I overlooked?

You won't receive any notifications. In the top right corner of the page, click on "my Profile". You will see a listing of any topics you have subscribed to. It's kind of like a short cut so you don't have to remember exactly what you are interested in.
