I know that the traditional way of affixing a coin into the Boston Box’s recess has long been a dab of magician’s wax.
Just wondering if anyone’s using alternate adhesives today, such as double-sided tape or repositionable glue sticks/dots or whatever the case might be, and if so how they compare with magician’s wax. Better, worse? Pros and cons?

Your post made me laugh because just yesterday I received my new S.A.M. card in the mail. When I peeled it off the renewal letter I thought the rubbery material that held it to the letter was pretty sticky and might work like wax. I used it to attach a half dollar to the bottom of a boston box.
Works great. Just another benefit of S.A.M. membership. -Feral |

All viable ways to do it mentioned above, but I've always simply used a piece of double-sided tape, and the half dollar is still stuck there to this day from years & years ago.

The original RNT used to supply a Boston Box that worked with a shimmed (or magnetic?) half. This way the box may be handled by a spectator both before and after you perform your latest miracle.

I use blu-tac, although I'm not sure what the equivalent is in the States.
Two small dots are all that's required. Jim |

The equivalent is Loctite "Fun-Tak", but you can buy blu-tac now on Amazon in the US. There are many copies too; Scotch "Removable Mounting Putty" (in blue or white), "Stik Tack and Press" and others. I have even used black mastic left over from a HAM radio antenna project. It is the same stuff they use for mounting windshields to a car. I don't recommend mastic for anything you don't want permanent. Not that you can't extricate a coin from a box if you needed to, but it leaves a black sticky mark and is much stronger than the putty type. All of the blu-tac clones are easy to remove, yet will hold for a few years. If you use them on something porous, however, it will make an oil stain and also be harder to remove.
I fell in love with this stuff when my wife showed me "Prestik" marketed by Bostic in South Africa, where she is from. When I ran out, I found the equivalents here and use it to put up screen material on windows for projection. The easiest way to get it off fabric is to put an ice cube on it to harden it or peel off as much as you can get in one go and then use the part you peeled off to press and pull off little pieces until you get it all. My 2 favorite things are Fun-Tak and cans of "Great Stuff" spray foam. I use the latter for everything from insulating my house, to making Halloween decorations, to gluing things together. Other than semi hard custom packing foam for my magic case, I haven't found a magical use for it yet |

This got me curious so I just looked it up. Here is more than most probably needs to know about the stuff but I find fascinating:

One of the issues I find is to keep the coin on the bottom appearing to be the same just-seen coin on the top of the multi-coin stack (which I carefully match to shine, finish, date mint, etc.). In my case some debris gets lodged between the box edge and the coin on the bottom whilst the coins in the removable stack remain debris-free. At this point I find that with magician's wax I can easily remove the bottom coin for cleaning and simply press it back in place. I have not yet had the bottom coin release unexpectedly during a performance. Most of the other attachment methods (tape, various adhesives, etc.) do not easily allow for a reliable attachment that may be also be so easily disengaged when needed.

Lewis Ganson suggests Blu-Tack in his Teach-In book on the Okito Box. Personally, I haven't needed to use anything sticky at all; I prefer to work with the box ungimmicked. See Bobo for a routine.
