I thought it woould be a good idea to write abouts kids tricks we can make ourselves.
Mums Flower Requirements: 2X blooming flowers 1 flower pot flower wand ( matching colour of booming flower) 18" silk Change bag You can buy this trick from practical magic for £40 with no change bag or silk. You brake one of the blooming flowers and rip of the feather flower at the end. Take the other flower and put it inside a small plant pot and put cotton wool or something to keep it in tight. I had to buy 3 blooming flowers becuse the wand had a diffrent colour flower on, it is very easy to change though, you just unscrew it and take of the existing flower and glue on the new one. Push the flower down and put the riped of one in the top of the flower and your set. This routine is in Terry herbert video ad lecture here is a smplyfied version Say its your mums or girlfriends bithday and youve bought her a cobbly wobble plant and it may look like a feather duster its actually a very rare plant and it only bloms once in a hundred years and todays the day! sniff the flower and sneeze blowing the false flower off. cover plant with silk place flower in change bag use various comedy to make it vanish finally using flower wand then put it under your arm make the flower dissapear then say it has gone back on the plant show bag empty, turn round and lift silk of to rcive applause everbody shouts its on the end of the wand pull from under arm and its gone repaeat this time though insted of retractng the flower pull it out and jump. take the flower (retracting it) as if it were inyour hand get a small girl to blow and you show your hand empty, lift of silk and show flower is there to a tremendous appluse! I made this for about £8 I already had the wand and change bag and silk but taht altoghether it would come to about £20 for a great effect So before you part with your hard earned cash think can I make this? HI,
Sorry Matt but making a dealer item yourself without purchasing it is totaly unethical! Unless you have permission or it is included in a lecture notes somwhere and you have purchased said notes or attendeed the lecture Phillip |

Yes I have got it in notes, but I cant see anything wrong with making your own dealer props, I think save yourself some money.

It depends. Sometimes part of buying the prop is the permission to perform the routine.
Just because you see something in another magicians show, doesn't mean you can automatically use it. Some routines are not public domain. It's about ethics. If it is shared in a lecture, in a book, or the patter/routine comes with the prop which you purchase, then that is a different thing. - Donald.

I can see where your coming from its the patter not the really just the trick. Its anice little trick if you make it espically for younger ones

The trick may not be public domain either.
There was a lot of problems many years ago when David Copperfield first performed Jim Steinmeyer's Origami Illusion. People tried to make their own copies, without the creator's permission. This is not allowed. Same happened to Andre Kole and one of his Spike Table Illusions. So, it applies to magic tricks and illusions as well as routines. Don't make it if you don't own the rights to do so. Some dealers have paid money for those rights. There are exceptions, like some public domain items. Also, sometimes if you bought the original prop and want to make your own with improvements, you can do so, as long as you are not making it to sell. Again, you don't own the rights. - Donald. P.S. I think a good person to speak on this subject might be John Breeds (Dishman) as he has had his Visible Colour Painting ripped off!

Well, Matt mentioned he got it off Terry's dvd/video which I presume he bought.I hope that any ideas shared on the dvd may be used since what would be the point of releasing the product in the first place. It's the original creator of Lite flite (sorry forgot who) who is missing out on his dues here.
There are however many tricks that are free for anyone to create since they are classics of magic and are now public domain. (Chinese sticks, square circle etc) I sometimes buy a trick and then remake it in my own style (as in clapometer in avatar). I assume this is ok as long as I don't produce them commercially, let me know if I'm wrong. For me building my own tricks is about creating something unique for myself rather than ripping off dealers to save a few bucks. George |

Hi, The points might be several 1. to allow you to see how a routine is structured and performed by a seasond pro 2. to allow you to use Terrys routine by Purchasing the requisit props The truth is that the props are mainly Paul Scotts (flghto flower) and not Terry's to expose or sell as to my knowledge paul has never offered this in notes or other form it is not a diy job ... In fact if you buy them from Terry after a lecture he himself being an ethical performer buy's them from Paul Scott Phillip |

Matt raises an interesting question, especially regarding children's magic, where the value is normally in the routine rather than the secret.
I've always felt that if the prop is for sale by a dealer you should purchase it from the dealer. Frequently dealers' props could do with some rebuilding or remodelling to suit the performer. Fair enough. Having purchaed the original, I feel you are free to make your own adaptions. If the prop is described in lecture notes, a magazine or a book, then you are free to make up the prop for your own personal use but not to sell it to others. The flower trick is reasonably priced and well made (at least the last time I saw one) so it's difficult to see how making one yourself would save you time and money. |

Most items are given by performers in lectures or tapes, etc. with the understanding that you can make one for yourself to use. But you cannot make others to sell.
One except to this was Tommy Windsor's Pitch Act, he had a clause that prevent anyone from doing this act within 50 miles of his hometown. Yes, I saw him enforce it one time.
