Please remember that if you show the average person an 'Oil and Water' routine it is likely the first time they've seen one. Magicians sometimes transfer their own predilections onto their audiences. Resist the urge.

Hmmm uh so yeah anyways in other news I forgot what "predilection" meant.
In other words: Whoops. Turns out I was agreeing with you.

David M.,
Thanks for posting Brown's video. I liked it -- especially the first phase where the change happens under the spectator's hands. Bob |

A question related to Merc Man, Tortuga, and Burnaby's posts: It seems to me that much of the discussion on the Café treats spectators as a uniform block. Since I have little performance experience, I wonder what people have found?: are there certain tricks and presentations that people use that almostly always are effective? I would think reactions would vary from audience to audience. Of course there are a few charismatic people in the world, in magic and elsewhere, who have the mysterious gift of appealing to large masses of people...

So when I refer to an audience, I mean a group of people you are performing to. I make no assumptions other than that they are not themselves magicians. There might be one among them, but when there is, they typically announce it. When I was on a business trip in Arizona I was quite surprised to visit a restaurant with a performing magician. First thing I did was tell him that I was too. He then changed his entire approach. He did stuff he wouldn't typically waste on "non-magician" patrons. Reactions will also obviously vary among groups. Most people have not seen a live, close-up performance other than Uncle Harry pulling a coin from their ear. So if you do anything decent, you should expect a strong reaction.

Thanks, Tortuga. Interesting story about magician changing his performance for a fellow magician. And thanks as always for the encouragement -- I'm thinking of your last sentence.

Not a trick/effect as such but when you mentioned 8 cards I immediately thought of the 8 planets.
