Over the years I've used many different confabulation routines. I had one of the first MIB, I've used Malloy's system, and currently have No Brainer. What is your favorite stage version that is also the most deceptive? So many give away the method in my opinion once the chest is lowered. I really like No Brainer, but I need something a little more flexible for my show. It does not have to be a one person routine, I have a production staff if needed. I feel the chest sometimes takes away from the surprise. The audience knows where you are going and it becomes a puzzle as to how you got there. Eery year, I am required to write a brand new 60 minutes by my producer and I've discovered I can cycle in some favorite routines wrapped with a new presentation. I've decided to take another look at a confabulation this year. What have you seen that is interesting? Thanks for any opinions.

Jeff Kaylor's Unbelievalope is a great alternative to chest based systems. The audience sees the prediction in the envelope before removal so it is more than a puzzle.

I do have that. It’s great for a small prediction. I use it regularly. However, I need something much much larger for my stage work. I usually end with a 12+ foot scroll or a big 20x30 paper. Thanks for the suggestion.

That’s the challenge, getting a larger reveal.
I love Cody’s confabulation... super clever method but the end prediction is on a standard piece of paper. |

Post cards from the edge... as long as you can find a more organic use for the chair.

My "Sealed Envelope Prediction", can be used with large manila window envelopes that hold the prediction that has been folded up into a smaller envelope. That prediction can be as large as you have room for. Because the prediction is in a huge envelope, no wooden chests are involved, just a disposable envelope that can be torn up afterwards if you don't mind replacing them.

Since this has been posted I’ve bought a Wellington MPS that I love. To me, the table needs to be justified and on stage long before the box has been lowered. There needs to be a reason for the table to exist (holding / displaying props) and there needs to be a reason that the box is set on the table.
What I love about MPS is the box looks nice hanging in the air... it’s something to be referenced throughout the show, and it can fit the image of your show. I don’t want to end my show breaking a bottle in a paper bag... not the image that I want. That’s personal of course based on my character. I also think the plastic tube looks more innocent than an envelope, and it justifies the box a bit more. It also has that “sealed in a test tube” look to it. Now personally, I still prefers Cody’s confabulation. I think it’s the best fooler out there, but I think for me, MPS is the best presentation especially for a closer. |
