Has anyone seen the hand through glass effect that is being offered by a seller on ebay? Watched the video and it looks good but is made in china. The seller is asking $499.00 plus ship for this effect. This can be used on stage or parlor but I am very leary of the quality but it looks sturdy and has stand that comes with it which I think does the work.
There is a chinese dealer offering this much cheaper but by the time you pay ship it will cost about the same. Has anyone got this effect or do you know anything about it? I think one could build this maybe if you knew the mechanism. I know most folks hate chinese producers but I think this one might be their creation.

Smoky Mountain Magic makes this illusion and sells it for only $1250.
The difference in price is well worth it for a quality illusion. |

Thanks for reply thomasR , I am aware of Smokey Mountain and yes they build beautiful props. My post was about how effects get blown out of proportion by internet sales like the guy on ebay but guess I stated it wrong. I have never seen this effect presented in the formatt this one shows. Just a simple frame on a stand.

It's my understanding that Dan Wolfe (Smoky Mountain Magic) "invented" the version of the hand through mirror illusion with the round mirror, which he calls "Looking Glass (Penetration)." (He doesn't just make the prop, but he invented this design of the trick, too.) Then others came along and copied his design.
https://www.smmagic.com/blog1/?product=l......etration There is no video of this illusion on his website, but he's posted it on Facebook in the past. This one is on my wishlist. I won't buy it elsewhere, because I like to support the original creator / builder. I haven't seen the one on ebay or from China, so I have no idea if they copied Dan's design. Does it look like they copied Dan's design? If so, that might factor into your buying decision. - Donald P.S. I realize it's not a new trick, per se. For example, 20+ years ago I owned a version of dove through plexiglas (aka dove through glass), where you could put your arm through it (instead of the dove). But the shape & frame was different.

Thanks for reply Donald. No the one from China is not like Dans but seems to be like many others in the working of it. However what attracts me is the fact that the audience sees a simple framed glass on a stand. I have watched the video several times and believe the stand triggers the glass for you know what. I too like to buy from original creators but this effect has been around a long time and so many variations to it have been devised and this is just another one. I think anyone could build this effect if they had the tools to do so. And I am sure that some folks have. I would like to have this effect but am not willing to invest that much money into it since I am retired and no longer perform on a regular basis but still do parlor routines now and again. Yes Dan's effect is outstanding and the only round glass penetration I have seen. I know too that quality of construction is hit and miss on what is sold from China but there are exceptions and in some cases are very good. Some of us just can't pay the big bucks.I like you will put Dans on wish list and hope maybe later to purchase but will have to save my coin, especially to keep off the couch, too tall to sleep well there.

I found the post, it’s certainly not a copy of Smoky Mountain Magic.
I guess I would rather buy a $1200 trick that I know 100% will be made correctly, and that will have a good resale value than buy a $500 gamble that will be hard to give away if it’s super cheap. |

I agree 100% thomasR but the effect is a little different. I think I could make this one but won't due to some health issues.

I have both versions.
I bought the Chinese version from a European dealer at an International Magic convention in London around 10 years ago. I didn't realise at the time it originated from China, else I would probably have hesitated, as I share the widespread concerns in the community about buying from Chinese dealers. However, on the positive side, the prop is sturdily built, has never let me down, and despite searching over the years I've never found any evidence of it being a direct knock-off. If anyone can show me otherwise please let me know - I'll retire it immediately. The prop is the one on this site, under the title "Putting A Hand Through Glass." I thought I'd share it because of the hilarious exposure fail. https://www.buzzfuse.net/353-1/secrets-b......evealed/ I acquired the Smoky Mountain Magic version a few weeks ago. I can endorse other comments on this - it is beautifully designed and constructed, supremely deceptive and the assembly is simplicity itself. This is Dan Wolfe at the very top of his game, which is saying something. The only thing it doesn't do is easily allow a spectator to pass their hand through the mirror without exposing the effect. (This is in contrast to the Chinese version.) Otherwise it is superior in every respect. |

I have Peter's Micro Devil Reflection which is the hand through glass effect. Very well made and very deceiving. He is still selling them.
