It's a swindle à la Three card monte or Thre shell game. You lay out a loop of chain (or string) in an figure of eight-form, and the victim places his finger in one of the loops. The loop is pulled away, and if it catches on the victims finger he wins.
It never does... Bjørn

If you are using rope for fast and loose, I recommend using at least six feet of rope.
You want the final figure to be spread out far enough so that the eye has to "travel" from one side to the other and can't easily take in the whole pattern at once. This is because the shape of the rope is simple and easy for the eye to follow, not nearly as confusing to follow as a French Rope or Flat Link chain. |

I learned this two ways. Thr figure eight loop or the three loops. We used to sell my routines with this in my Dads old magic shop before he passed on. We called it the chain of chance.
I used to pay for my lunch in school with this trick.

Chuck Smith has one of the most brilliant handlings of this effect. it is called the Ultimate Endless Chain, and can be bought directly from him.

What is unique about Chuck Smith's approach? I haven't seen his version.

I've never seen fast and loose performed for the public. I have only seen it once as performed by a very compitent magician. It did absolutely nothing for me. I saw through it instantly and just shrugged at my friend who was performing it. So I guess that's what makes a market.

Come see me at the Castle July 8-10 in the WC Fields Bar. Ask me, and I will demo Fast and Loose for you. You will like it, and you won't see through it, or I will buy you a drink. Better yet, come on the 8th which is a special night. The School for Scoundrels is sponsoring Soapy Smith night, and it should be quite a time. Chef Anton will be doing his trick shot show, I will be working the bar, and Jeff Smith, Soapy's great grandson will be there to give a talk on the greatest conman of the nineteenth century, and perhaps the greatest shell game operator of all time. We will be giving away some copies of our new three-card monte dvd, and having a lot of other neat stuff going on. Starts at 7:00 pm, and finishes at 9:15 pm (the time Soapy was shot) with the traditional toast. Fast and Loose is a great swindle, but there are a lot of very weak methods out there, and lackluster routines. Don't judge by just one. Jules Lenier, Ricky Jay, Gene Maze, and many other great performers have featured it in their shows. |

Whit,
Thanks so much for the invite. I will be there on the 8th and be ready to be convinced otherwise re: my fast and loose opinion. However, I will buy you a drink for all the help your various books have been to me and to those I entertain. Can't wait to see the new dvd! See you then. Jim
