The coins are nice, but you can do the routine with just 2 Morgans and a [
Lucky now you can even get replica coins and [ to do this with easy enough and for little cost.

Mb217,
You are so right! There's really no need to get such an expensive set to do this, or any other coin routine. I recently ordered this set from Schoolcraft. They're ridiculously expensive. Beautiful but, very expensive. I will more than likely use clad coins to do this routine for laymen. But I do like the idea of using replicas and an expanded shell, provided the shell has been well made. Good tip! As always, thank you for your valuable insight! Best, Roberto

I do 0,5 coin for years, since sell his dvds. I love his routine.
For me is this one of the most visuel coin routine. So fine, clean and after all clear. I don’t do a three fly because in my opinion there is always something/ somewhere dirty or silly. I know it’s my opinion. That’s why I like this routine. |

Jac-dutch-,
Nice! I see you're out in the Netherlands. Do you perform this routine with American coins or your native coins? I've been working on this daily, I practice with both half and dollar coins. I'm starting to notice that I'm getting better with the toss move and I'm leaning more towards dollar coins for this routine. Roberto

Good point Jac. 3 fly has a "dirty" feel to me too, from spec. reactions. This type of routine is better for me.

Thank you to the original poster for bringing up Will Houstoun’s coin routine. I had not come across his work before and the routine is very magical and just a great performance. In addition I agree that toss move is extremely cool! I have since been trying to incorporate it into a ball manipulation routine and have brought it up over at the finger/stage manipulation section. Just to add in addition to trying to incorporate this kind of toss move to a ball manipulation routine I also have been trying to learn the actual coin routine from Will Houstoun’s Live Penguin lecture. One difficulty I experienced is that the only shell I own is for an Eisenhower dollar and it tends to talk. I’m not sure if it has anything to do with the quality of the shell or just the nature of the coins or maybe my handling or some sort of combination! But, and I’m still working on it, I am finding with some handling adjustments I can use part of the John Journey coin coalition set that I have to essentially do the three phases in the routine. I use just two (of the three) coin coalition coins and a regular Eisenhower dollar. It is the regular coin that gets tossed from hand to hand...I don’t want to risk damaging the cc coin by dropping it on a hard surface. It’s just something I’ve been playing around with and I’m not sure the handling can be as clean with part of a cc set versus a [ but I’m having fun experimenting:)

Kanawati,
I'm glad you're enjoying Coin 0.5 by Will Houstoun. It is a great coin effect indeed. I prefer doing this routine with silver dollars instead of half dollar coins. I have a Morgan Shell Set that's made by Keupper and the shell was talking when I would do the coin roll but I took the advice of several Café members and I stuck a piece of teflon inside the shell. I must say, this has quieted the shell quite a bit but every now and then I do get a little talking when I do the coin roll with the nested shell. I have a new Deans Morgan Shell set on order with Schoolcraft. I'm eager to see if the Schoolcraft shell will talk when I do the coin roll. Have fun with the routine. I know I am! Be well! Roberto

A week ago I response, but the website got a update. So my story is gone, lol!
Thanks mavencountry and Roberto I use sometimes euro coins. Because I live in the Netherlands (Europe). If I do a coin-effect I think which coins I use. The 2-euro coins are recognizeble for people. It’s a coin which is using a lot. These coins are smaller (3-4 mm) so less control for some moves. I use sometimes my silver half dollars. Great to see the silver coin and sounds great. It let the people remember the national coin before the eurocoins. But using another coins brings something suspicious. The coin don’t be recognize by people. So it should be maybe a ‘special fake coin or something like that’ (after you showed the effect). They have no idea, it’s just their feeling. I can do with half dollars a lot more and practice with thes coins. I use for 0,5 coin deffenly the morgan dollar. Because I stay from distance by the audience. They can see the coins clear. Also for me better to catch the coin! There are no big euro coins like Morgan’s. I use the philosophy that I learned from Eric Jones at a lecture: what are you showing? Close-up right for them? Use Half dollars. Are they at distance, you use dollarsize. I hope you can understand this worse English story. 😂 |

This is a gorgeous effect. The structure is what I found the most appealing. The initial phase with the closed hands creates a context for the visual at the fingertips approach which follows. Using the Homer Liwag phase of the coin going but not going is much stronger than the weak phase usually found in three fly routines where the coin “visually“ goes across. Finally ending with a nice visual movement. Much easier for the audience to follow using two apparent coins as opposed to three. Here’s my take on the routine. Definitely not perfect with a little bit more hand movement than is necessary but definitely going in the right direction.

Nice going there Ed, well done and quite magical. 😊 I really like your very casual presentation as it makes the magic even stronger. Like I always say, regarding “Less is More,” it don’t take much with a real winner of an effect like that...Just 2 coins and WOW! 🤩
And man, you got that toss down perfectly. Good job! 😁👍🏽

The phase where the coin is tossed from one hand to the other but doesn't go is not Liwag's, it belongs to Geoff Latta.

Like Ed I really like the structure of the trick. And I see what you did there Ed, no roll down move! I’ve taken it one step further...not only don’t I do the roll down I also don’t do the toss move. After all these years I never tried to master the roll down and I’m not at the point where I can say I’ve mastered the toss. But I really like the idea of a coin going but not going. So for the time being I’ve replaced that move with something that does not have the visual amazement that Will’s phase has but hopefully it creates a “hmmm” moment:) It also allows me to build to the last phase. I’ve performed this a couple of times already. I’m suspecting that with the way my phase is broken into two parts, the audience might not always be sure what I’ve done the first time the coin goes but does not go. The second time helps reinforce what happens I think...I hope! Here’s a link showing the last two phases only as there is nothing different I do with the first two phases except I do use a different script. Only sharing this unlisted video with my Café friends as it’s not the complete routine and won’t make sense to anyone not following this thread!
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7JxWpDg-s04 Do you find it easy to follow or is it confusing? Does it work presentation wise? I’d be grateful for any feedback:) John |
