Hey folks,
Anyone here sign up for Benjamin Earl's new The Deep Magic Seminars series of online card magic courses? I'm seriously thinking of signing up for the New Theory Switch seminar as this is a topic of great interest to me. The content seems pretty good and when you break down the cost per hour (6 hours per course) it's actually a great deal. Unfortunately for me, because of time conflicts, I'd have to watch the courses after they air live. https://www.studio52magic.com/deep-magic-seminars/ Roberto

What makes Ben so great, and also his "downfall", is that it's all in the little nuances, which doesn't translate well to the page. On the page it says to cut to a step in the deck, which sounds a bit "meh", but when you see him do it, then it's great! I think video does his material more justice, than print. So Im sure these Deep Magic Seminars will be great!
All the best, Dan |

To each its own.....
Ok so I haven't subscribed to the course ....yet....I have the two shift books...and Ben came to our Charlotte Close up a year and a half ago and Magic Live before that. And growing up I was the most impatient person you would ever meet...but ... I have been studying the two books for many months now ...I keep coming back to them and I sure have a lot of others that I could go to too... yeah a bit expensive for 3 tricks and some talk on a few sleights..but you guys are missing out on the gold...the tricks are so strong and so well thought out...he shows small touches in handling but more important he puts the words in your mouth and when to say them that simply elevates the effect to something more than special certainly more than average or routine... I look to what he thinks we should perform ..and yeah you could say they are hard to do but that should motivate you to practice enough so it isn't that hard.... a signed folded card is switched out from the spec's hand with some drama a spectator after a shuffled deck tells you when to stop as you singly deal the cards to the table to stop at his card (with NO estimation and no double or triple lifts as Mark Calabrese does ...and his is good too) a card to pocket a 2nd opposite card to pocket and switch of both in spec's fingers as the whole deck is put away ala Eddie Fechter...isolating the initial two chosen cards that they think they are holding aces and I am not the biggest fan of out of this world but the spectator gets to deal all the cards out and the colors are separated without that midway correction.. and now how to best top palm a card from the deck what I am focusing now... I know it seems a little for a lot of dollars but if you learn and do the things rather than pass on them I think you would be richer...I sure am yeah its hard to do but I think worth the quest. so Ben Earl in his total devotion to the art in levels we could never catch up to is a special teacher... I don't know how basic some of this stuff is ...but to criticize the course without seeing it via his recent books I think is a bit narrow minded. yeah you can rationalize not spending a lot of dollars for some possibly special knowledge from a proven provider or you can roll the dice and ...to my mind come out ...better.. I know I know not anything you wanted to hear. but after 55 years of this ...I think there are probably diamonds in this course that probably won't be evident on a quick persusal. NObody in my area can hold or handle a deck of cards and me after doing some of this stuff will ....simply ....soar! Marty Shapiro Greenville, SC |

Well we will have to agree to disagree! I LOVE an interesting script but found none in these books and why oh why muddy 'Out of this world' with 'Oil and water!

I think there are enough reasons to like and to dislike his work. Im seeing this like Marty and I would love to read a review about his seminar.
So I hope that someone who participate will report here. |

When Ben Earl was one of two lecturers at Magic Live in 2018 he killed the room when he had a coin in his left hand and with sleeves rolled up appear in his right hand as two spectators held his wrists...and then he went on to talk the entire time about his psychological and analytical evaluation of magic which I think none of us could keep up with. He is on such a level that transcends the usual magician ...yes even those guys ...sigh! here. The level of detail that he took in pulling this coin trick off was so involved that one couldn't help but appreciate his approach and as many of the people I think are mentors the tricks he feels merit performance.
Yeah I know you guys travel in different circles but for me his visions his ideas even maybe more than the tricks themselves have merit. Yeah his boastful top palming a card may not suit everyone as the ultimate that sure depends on your sensitivities but for the moment and in my travels and I am sure educated in this ..his method ..affected me. I guess what I am trying to say is that someone on his level is so much more likely to provide some wonderful help than many others by the sheer level of thinking and detail on so many levels. I would bet my life that if I took this course this affectation would probably be ...quite plentiful. Not many really talk about sleight of hand these days... talk and ...teach... everyone else wants the quick trick usually. I again don't think you all can judge negatively for what he is offering many hour wise from the written description of three tricks in two books about 50 pages each. Yeah it might be hard to justify an expense and even more so time spent in comparing your skills to his to find just what is commercial. I think quietly that this might be of some significant value. It's not the money so much here but the time needed to see it all as I like most of you are probably inundated with stuff to confront. But as far out as I am commenting on all this to even my surprise... I'll probably take a second mortgage on the house again and spring for this. Nothing we buy either physical or only printed can guarantee value and my wife will sure moan in public with the 1000 of little pieces in her house that I have accumulated in this quest for ....more!. Unless you can write a book or two of 50 pages and provide some amount of noticeable content to some part of the masses I might encourage you to reconsider the possible value of this unique training. yeah I know current events sure limit our chance to get out at all and maybe cause some of these guys to print publish and put out more of their thinking than might be usually the case... I say we take advantage of it as we can...yeah some are opportunistic in their pricing and their offerings. Who's to know which one will ....sigh!.. fit. But from what I have seen and what I have read over the years my guess is that this course is probably special and unique. Marty |

Oh and I had to separate this comment from the last and this was what came to mind to keep the dialogue going first...something you guys can make fun of me to no end.Ihate oil and water plots almost as much as out of this world....so give the spectator the *** deck and let him deal out all the cards himself separating the colors so quickly that you can get on with all the better card magic plots there are... my session are always tearing me up on this distaste for these two tricksyou all might just get on the band wagon with them...it's ok I expect it...the tricksare too slow and too quiet for me...but hey that is just me.
I sure enjoyed this back and forth and in a small way it has challenged my thinking about other sleight of hand... I am in a sea of innocents here as I challenge my skill level always and at now age 69 my dry hands are just a curse of life in this pursuit. Yeah I will have fun with any of you harmlessly... I found I sure enjoyed the little bit of attention. Marty |

I have booked the Brillant Basic course and attended the first two sessions live. It is all about acting and handling the cards in a open, natural and very casual way. Ben certainly is the living example and role model for handling cards in such an easy and casual way and you can watch him very close in this Seminar and learn his thinking and Nuances about it. He covers the 45 degree rule, Breaking the Frame, and his fantastic breakhandling !!! He also covered simple but very effective Card Controlls, cuts and Shuffles which make the card magic more easy and casual. This is a great seminar for beginners to learn it the right way and great for experienced card handlers who want to improve their naturalness and casualness with a deck of cards. For me the two first sessions where really great and already worth the investment.

I thought <=> was a decent value. I liked his Ace cutting DVD but I passed on the shift books and am glad I did from all the less than stellar reviews I read.

I have attended both Brilliant Basics and the Switches seminars. I found both excellent and subsequently subscribed to the other two and purchased all of The Shift series, which I have not received. He gives MUCH thought into how to best teach and plows a significant portion of income from his courses back into them to improve image quality, etc. I was encouraged to look into this by David Williamson, who I took a lesson from online (also highly recommended). Hope he continues to conduct video "hangouts" after the courses themselves as much info was gained through them as well (although they're not recorded).

I also upgraded from the Brilliant Basic to all 4 courses. This made 16 Sessions within 4 weeks Ben Earl Sharing 25 years of his knowledge, experience and thinking. Each session followed up with 2-3 hours hangout with Ben Earl and others touching all sorts of subjects and stories around and besides magic - even were you can find the best beer in the world These Hang outs are already legend. Awesome courses. I hope that he will do new courses with new themes in the future.
