I heard they are going to do a reality TV show involving magicians. Has anybody heard about this? I think it is suppose to be on the WB or something.

Yes, this was another discussion entirely. It was deemed to be sort of an "American Idol" for magic.

Do we know when it is supposed to start? What channel is it going to be on?

Does it have anything to do with Marco Tempest?

A magic reality show? Great - Magic's image isn't bad enough, so we need to decrease and humiliate magic in the public eye by developing a reality show around it.
Gee, I just can't wait to see who is magic's answer to William Hung. Maybe if things don't work out with "Juiced", we could get O.J. Simpson to host. After all, he did do magic once on Circus of the Stars. |

If it's anything like Pop Idol, it will make me look very talented.

What is wrong with magic on TV? Even if a few bad magicians show up it is still exposure. I am sure that a lot of good if not great magicians would be on the program. Why do we want to keep magic as this perfect art, but only performed in some guys dark basement?
Knock Pop Idol or not, a lot of people have succeeded as a result of being on that show. |

YES! Another reason for the public to bash magic's image. It's bad enough a lot of laymen think of us as failed Houdini wannabees who wear capes and top hats. Whoever thought of the idea for a magic American Idol/reality show should be eaten by Eugene Burger.

Well, I don't think many of them will be showing up in capes and top hats. Do you perform for people, David Ranalli, or are you afraid that the public will view you as a failed Houdini wannabees who wear capes and top hats?

Hopefully if the public gets exposed to some really bad magicians, then they'll begin to appreciate the really good ones.
Incidentally, the REALLY good ones won't even consider being on the show. So if the show does get some airtime, be prepared to see a lot of mediocre magic. On the other hand, the show could be a very good forum for what NOT to do. -E |

I highly doubt that not one good magician will be on the show. I saw a glimpse of a show that will be on NBC called "them" (I think) from what I saw it is a street performance reality TV show. The guys in the promo did not look like a bunch of hacks!

I have a question about them. Is it a one-time show or is it a series? If it is a series, how many episodes will be in it? Thanks.

I know they won't be showing up with capes, but the public already has this view of a stereotypical magician. The kid's magician and others associated with Houdini and David Blaine. I would hate to see the show have magicians that are bad or just not doing anything that make them deserve to be on TV.

Everyone is just assuming that the magicians featured in the reality show will be bad. What if they are brilliant?

I would think that depending on how the producers of the show want magicians to 'look', that is how they will be portrayed.
While I am hoping that this show's production qualities stay high and the auditioning process is together, I'm sure we are bound to see one or two sinkers. It should be interesting to say the least. Take Care, Vincent |

I understand that some of the public view magicians in a negative way, but if this show is good and it has good magicians, couldn't people change their opinion? Obviously if it is horrible it does not look good. If every magician is horrible it probably won’t even air.

The reason I believe that the magicians will be bad is because if David Blaine can get a TV special, then John from down the street who has been doing magic for 5 years can get one. If professional magicians are judging who will be on, then I'm not worried. But since we as magicians, can fool a lot of people, then people who decide who get TV shows will be fooled too and will instantly believe these people to be brilliant, even if they aren't. I won't deny the fact that they may be good; I haven't seen it of course. But either way it's better to expect lower of the show, that way if it bad you aren't disappointed. And if it is good you are really surprised and enjoy the show more.

So David, you are looking at this show the same way I look at any movie. I walk into the theater expecting to see the worst show of my life. It never is, so I feel like I didn't waist my money. Fair enough.
I just hope the show is good and that it puts a positive light on magicians. |
