Hello all,
I am looking for sources for pendulum routines that could be performed over Zoom. I'm toying with the idea of sending out physical packages to clients, and thought including a pendulum might work well. Aside from playing around with the ideomotor response on my own, I've never used them, and thus don't have much of an idea where to start. If anyone could point me in the right direction, that would be greatly appreciated. |

You might want to take a look at Dr. Bill's Trybil. It is full of presentations, effects and methods with pendulums: https://www.penguinmagic.com/p/3078

TC Tahoe has an excellent book on pendula, as well. Also, Richard Webster wrote a book on them. Although aimed at the believers, not performers, there's a lot of good stuff in there. He also wrote a book for the performers, but I have not read that one and cannot comment on it.
I would suggest you buy or make one (any weight on a string will work at first) and play around with it. Watch some YouTube videos of people using them for dowsing, divination, and so on. Get an idea of what folks actually believe about them. Just teaching people how to use them, then demonstrating what happens when they hold the pendulum and you give suggestions can be incredibly interesting. It feels like real magic and it happens in their hands. I don't actually do online performing, myself, so I can only describe what I have done in person that I think would work online. Have a card with a double-ended arrow drawn on one side and a circle on the other. Teach the other person how to make the pendulum move without consciously moving his or her hand. This is "teaching the pendulum." Now, hold up the card with the arrow going up/down. Say "watch what the pendulum does when you concentrate on this line." Usually, it will begin to swing forward and back. Rotate the card 90 degrees and say "now watch what happens." Turn the card around to show the circle. I might then explain how it can answer yes/no questions. Which is also interesting. These are just a few ideas to get you started. You can play with a pendulum right away and get a feel for what it is like. If you want to send one to a client, I suggest you look for a decent-quality source. The quality of the prop says something about you as a performer. I'd probably go with one of the metal ones in that case. -Patrick |

I've done this before with HooDoo Boxes on the radio many times over the years.

I really like asking them to MAKE a pendulum live on zoom with some string and a rock
And then using that! |
