If gaming has become the most popular form of entertainment in the world because it exists in so many forms to be consumed, then is magic not the most popular form of entertainment in the world because it exists in so few forms to be consumed?

I doubt that's a major factor.
It's much more likely that there just aren't many great magic shows.

Well, I am an old man: my grandson calls me technologically challenged. Or something like that. I now have a huge HD TV hooked up by him to my computer. While there is nothing like a good live magic show, I was wondering if I could now watch live streamed magic shows? Suppose I want to watch a live magic show in Vegas tonight on TV. I can do likewise, if say, I want to watch live sports, like horse racing, football or boxing on TV.

Don't ask a barber if you need a haircut... and don't ask a magician if there need to be more magic shows. As it says in Our Magic... "Always assume the point of view of a disinterested spectator."

I think there are some great magic shows but they are not available on demand at home. What do we want? We want to see what is going on at the Magic Castle! When do we want it? Now!

It's a pretty different animal. Gaming as entertainment includes time playing console games on your own, or online shooter games, or Clash of Clans while you're on the can. It's far easier to fit into a schedule and I don't want to be asked to pick a card while I'm on the throne.
Gaming is more interactive than just watching television or a movie, and there's an increasing social aspect to it that a magic show is going to have a hard time competing with. People aren't just being entertained by games, they are gaming. It's a rare magic show that you would attend, much less watch, where you would say that you were magicking. |

Art has become a game; people no longer go to concerts to just sit and listen to music but go to participate and thus, they themselves, become part of the piece. Doing so is not new but it’s in fashion. The old Globe theatre was designed so its stage went down into the audience so the audience felt they were in the play. The audience participated in Shakespeare’s plays there. The actors new they were doing their job when they got the audience to thinking, this could be real, this is real! They call it high drama; Rock concerts are such.

I can accept "rock concert" and "music" in the same sentence, but "Art?" The very fact that people are more interested in group-grope stuff than music removes it from art.
I question the audience is there to "become part of the music." Conflicts with what I have read of group mania. They wish to escape, not be "made to think." Volume is not a transfer of emotion. Destroying instruments is not sculpture. You lost me with rock concerts being "real" or "high drama. I can enjoy rock music - not the point. Paying money to be abused is another matter. Just my opinion, of course. But such group mania cannot support magic that requires focused attention and some balance of anticipation/surprise. The only thing impossible is finding a parking space. Yes, it is unlikely that people who like rock concerts are willing to sit through an hour-long magic show in appreciative participation. This does not mean that magicians should try to be more like rock concerts to attract larger audiences. Should magicians diversify to make more money? A valid question, Not sure either gambling or rock concerts help with that consideration.

The Nazi Nuremberg Rally was a masterpiece, akin to a great opera; if one can get over the politics and see it as such. Some of the greatest works of art are political and religious actually. At concerts the crowed influences the music and the music the crowed. From afar, one is looking at and listening to the whole thing, as opposed to simply what is going on, on stage. The whole thing is spectacular work of art. The films of it do not just film the band but film and crowed going nuts, this whole thing is really what the show is. It is not just what the magician does but what the audience do. David Blaine is one who knows and exploits it. Go and watch his TV specials and see he not the only doing the entertaining; it is also the reactions of his audience are also entertaining. Together they are the piece.

Magic should be rare, like sideshow. The success of sideshow in recent years has killed it. How many times do you need to see someone eat a light bulb, no matter how well or entertainingly it is done?
I don't understand the call for more popularity of an art that is supposed to be special and a rarity. I don't want there to be more magicians. I wish I was the only one... |

We are fortunate that we get to decide what art we like, but fortunately we don't get to decide what is at for others. If you don't like rock music with "group grope" stuff going on then it is not for you. Others find it an art from and you don't get to tell them differently.
I do not want magic to be more prevalent. Not by a long shot. It does magic no good to be easily accessible. It should be special. Heck that is the goal isn't it? The hoops you need to jump through to get into the Castle, as small as they are, make the experience more special. Look what happened to comedy and comedy clubs once you could access it 24/7. It didn't do the art form any favors I'll tell you that much.

How many forms of magic are there?
I seem to recall somebody saying there are nine.
