I have a set of 12" hollow stainless steel (I assume, but are very shiny, maybe chrome?) that I got probably over 25 years ago. It has a magnet to unlock, so what I recall, you don't pass out the ring until you are done with a routine and have locked the ring. But the good thing is, it can be fully examined and cannot be taken apart until a magnet is used above from the top of the ring at the seam. Anyone know what set this is and who made it? What do you think it's worth?
Thanks, this is my first post on Magic Café. Click here to view attached image. |

There are many previous discussion on the Café' on this and similar themes. There is a power search engine available and you will often discover new ideas from the search.
One recurring notion is that having the rings examined in not necessarily a plus as it suggests there might be something phony or gimmicked. Having them casually handled is one thing, offering them for examination is poor or risky. "Worth?" questionable except for a collector. The idea, of course, is to have your performance so profound and filled with awe & wonder that no one cares to seek an explanation or secret. But, since you own this set, how do you make the most of it? I'd just leave them lying around and move on to other effects. The fact that you "don't care if they are examined or not" will send an adequate message. Thus, if you think this feature is important, it is. It will impact your presentation.

You will have to post 50 posts before you can enter the Let's Make A Deal section of the Café to post them for sale. It is best to show all the rings in the set, not just the key ring. The key ring looks in bad shape. Best to have the instructions as well. Usually the instructions has the manufacture.
You will also need a picture of the complete set, as that ring does not match most Linking ring sets. It actually matches a cheap ring that a wholesale magic dealer sells from China. If I had to guess, it is more of remake by someone, as the China sets use an internal hook. It is hard to take that you purchased something that should have been costly, but you do not remember anything about it where you purchased it. Magnets lose their power Over time, so they may not work at all. As I see it, they are not worth much being in such bad shape. |

I see plenty of magnetic locks, but all of those cannot be examined. I asked about worth because I plan to sell since I'm trying to move towards prop-less magic. Just wanted to get an idea of a fair price to offer to someone that would like it. |

Does the key ring match the other rings? Do they all have a seam?

That is a bit of an unusual piece of kit. Would be interesting to use in a two ring routine where you pass out two rings unlinked for examination at beginning. Then at end cleanly display two rings linked and maybe even hand back to audience member for quick tug. Thinking a quick routine similar to how Chris Randall works them. Could even put in some Benson-esque moves near the beginning with the two examined rings.
