“Whatsoever is contrary to nature is contrary to reason, and whatsoever is contrary to reason is absurd.”
-Baruch Spinoza I think so and I think that it is the absurdity of it which makes it intrinsically amusing.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

It is a kind of upstairs basement.

C&R comes to mind.
If you were to repeatedly cut a rope, and it never stays cut... outside of entertainment it would be an awfully frustrating and absurd situation. But this is "Food for Thought" so the very definition of Absurd will require a lengthy and absurd argument.
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

Josh, has anybody told that you look like a Turtle with a human head?

People have said many, many, many terrible things about me, most are true and applicable, but I've rarely been told I have any turtle attributes.
My avatar is pretty accurate, but the face is wrong... I have a lot more hair there now.

It was well known to the ancient Egyptians that a turtle with a human head had magical abilities. If a magician is a man playing the role of a turtle with a human head, then he must prove he is a real turtle with a human head by demonstrating the magical abilities of the turtle with a human head. Otherwise, nobody would believe him.

What is more absurd than “It is but it cannot be.”?
Our magic is not like a joke which one gets - nobody gets our magic - well, if they do get it, then it then is a failure. Instead, our magic derives its humour from the absurdity of nonsense making sense, a simultaneity of opposites, an irrational rational, outcome. The magician essentially gets his audience to reason from a false assumption by manipulation of the facts. And as Plato said, an "inevitable absurdity" is the outcome of reasoning from a false assumption.

Thank you kindly, Pop.
Anyhow, I think, our magic is funny enough without adding naff side jokes; as I saw somebody do the other day but apart from that, I enjoyed the show.
