Wow, what a thread, what a read-through. I'm sure Taran isn't coming back. Sometimes a direct answer, rather than what we've been doing, is better in the long run, no?
Here's my 2c idea: Pride Flag Blendo, either custom made or using different silk sets, like a thumb tip rainbow streamer from Gosh + a few TT blendos from Mr. Magic or VDF. I imagine the patter will come naturally. |

Hi taranwandering,
My friend does magic with eggs while talking about coming out as a trans woman. She's awesome and her work is amazing. No limit to what magic and patter can be. Thanks Walt for writing in helpful stuff. |

This has been an interesting thread, to sat the least. And the comments that provide supportive helpful answers to the OP really do stand out. Thank you for those! These days, I'm primarily a mentalist and tarot reader and the question of patter and presentation is INCREDIBLY important since these fields need to relate back to an audience member more directly than most magic effects.
As a queer person I not only perform in LGBTQ+ spaces, but I also recognize that audiences in ALL spaces simply want to be respected for who they are- particularly by a performer they have potentially never met! SO MUCH mentalism/magic patter is particularly dated and gendered ("Men: think of x, Women: think of x") And that doesn't cut it anymore with robust modern audiences, and especially wont click with LGBTQ+ participants either. There are so many effects that involve couples, or personal interests that can be reframed to cater to LGBTQ+ folks and fresher tastes. Be creative, and push yourself to reframe effects for the spaces you're going to be performing in. This will certainly make you a better performer as well. The most important thing is that you create a character and material that is an extension of yourself AND entertaining. Do you want to be serious or comedic? Larger than life or closer to your own personality? Magic performance enters the Drag scene quite a bit, and usually it's of the comedic slant- I think this is usually a great approach because typically folks gather in community to laugh, relate, and have a good time with likeminded people. Whatever you do, to thine own self be true. And thank you for this awesome question!

“Identity politics” usually means “I don’t identify with you, so please keep your differences to yourself because they make me uncomfortable.”
I think some people might also need to learn what “heteronormativity” means and why it needs to go. And how you might feel if someone suggested that who you are was a “political” matter. I’m glad there are some understanding people here, and folks like Spellbinder to actually speak with the kindly voice of experience.
There are many tricks, and many effects, but rarely a Grand Effect. There are many entertainers, but few real magicians. Many technicians, but few artists who use their art to explore their vision. - Derren Brown, Absolute Magic
