One of the last living 10-in-one performers. I wanted to be in show business the worst way, and that was it.

A good monte crew can convince a wealthy mark that you can never win against a good monte crew, persuade the mark to finance a high stakes monte game against an apparent sucker and apparently lose.
As they say, things are not always what they appear to be.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

There are a number of variations on that script, tommy. The Texas Twist is a favorite. The Girl at the Bar another. A number of these are described in "School for Scoundrels Notes on Three Card Monte."

That is the only twist I know Pop: I once knew an Indian crew that worked it that way. They had some big scores back then, in the 1970s.

My favorite is the Dry Cleaners script. The "rich guy" would be the Dry Cleaner next to his cash register till full of money...
Basically, any Closed Monte will be this kind of scam. |

I think it is fumy that the advice that you cannot win, in this twist persuades the sucker that he cannot lose.
The Indian Crew would mainly target Sikhs: the ones with gold turbans are the ones with the money. As I understood it, the game would often take place behind closed doors inside the marks home.

The Texas Twist is a "salt and pepper" game--a black guy and a white guy take down a rich white guy. The black guy flashes a wad of cash at a liquor store to a well to do white guy and tells him he'll give him fifty bucks cash for a ride to an address just blocks away. They get lost, and asking directions they end up picking up the second team member. The black guy and he inflame the mark's narcissism and racism, and end up taking the mark for hundreds in his own car.
Closed Monte was the most common form of the game in the 19th Century, Open Monte is more common in the 20th. |

There was a short video of Doc's mentor showing off his skills somewhere on this board if anyone is interested.
