Hi to everyone!
Since I'm "New to magic", I hope this is the right section for this topic. As stated in my presentation, I got involved in magic during Italy's first lockdown; I bought a few decks and picked up Royal Road, EATCT, Expert at the card table. Then I discovered the magic Café and a number of books and material that I couldn't imagine so big! Being the stupid book collector that I am, as soon as I discovered a new author I researched for, basically, the whole bibliography. The majority of those books being out of print, I began looking for pdf versions, and I was quite happy actually to find out most of them for a few dollars, in (seemingly) legitimate shops that I found on google's first page! I think some of them may sell illegally copyrighted content, is this a well known issue? We all know that you can find anything for free (illegally), but this is the first time I find illegal shops (and quite a few of them!) devoted to a single subject. Is there any specific reason why this happens in magic? |

Yes, it is well known. There's several threads discussing it on these forums if you look long enough.
As for a specific reason? I believe so, yes. And that reason is that, for a very long time, magicians have put a lot of emphasis on the secret methods of what they do. They have put so much value on the physical methods of their deception that, of course, people are going to try to use that to make a profit themselves, even when they are not good enough to actually create those methods themselves. In other words: Greed.

Hate to see it happen, I always have people messaging me on Instagram looking for this info, I just tell them buy it and then block them 🙂
