With the recent release of Pi Revelations by David Penn, what does everyone think about incorporating pi in magic routines? I have been using Vincent Hedan’s pi book test for years and got great reactions. There was a pi release by Alakazam which looked similar but I don’t know much about it. Can we get some honest reviews and thoughts on these effects?
For me, it’s a bit like cube magic and gambling demonstrations. If you can’t solve a cube for real then cube magic probably isn’t going to look as convincing or authentic as it will in the hands of a keen cuber. The way you handle a deck of cards makes a difference to the choices you should make in the way you do card tricks. And with pi, if you’ve learnt real memorisation techniques or really had a go at memorising a large chunk or pi then it will make a difference to how convincingly you perform a pi trick. This new Pi Revelations trick seems more a mentalist routine than a demonstration of memorisation. |

David Trustman released a method for memorizing a huge chunk of Pi. I've been leaning towards picking it up to learn that to use with Hedan's pi book test, but I'm curious if anyone has tried Trustman's method: https://www.vanishingincmagic.com/ebooks/pi-david-trustman/

I've used a variation of Rachel Colombini's book test with an ungimmicked 400+ page pi book with a million digits. Three different audience members choose the digits of a random page. I then quickly write out 30 digits found on that page: first ten, ten in middle, and last ten (each page has rows and columns so easy to locate). Has served well in school shows.
I have ordered PI Revelations as I think the above method could be added as a no-tech initial phase. The booklet is only 90'ish pages. But I think I can still use method by having three audience members each choosing a number and having them multiplied together and divided by two to generate the random number. I haven't audience tested this yet. But the multiplication approach may justify bringing a device into play which helps later on. |
