Hi,
This may be a question no one can help me with - or I might be lucky if others have found themselves in the same boat at times. I've recently published two books on gimmicked card effects/mentalism etc through Murphy's and they're available at all the usual dealers. Half the print run has sold in about four days, which is great, but I'm guessing that's because people noticed them on the 'New' listings, liked what they saw, and bought them. From now on, things may slow down simply because no one will know they exist. I know most books will sell through reviews/word of mouth but, when you're a relative unknown, it's hard to break out of the pack. I'm deliberately not naming the books - or saying who I am - as that would be a roundabout way of trying to advertise and I wouldn't abuse the board's rules like that. I am genuinely interested in whether anyone here has ever found themselves in a similar position and found a solution. I suspect there is no easy answer to this other than - 'Get reviews' - but I thought I'd ask just in case. Hope you're all keeping safe and well. Thank you (from the UK - the only info I'm giving about myself ). (I'm not entirely sure I'm even posting in the right 'room'!) |

I know you are looking for other options ... Contact podcast content creators you are familiar with and ask for an interview about the book.
* Do your own promo video ... better quality the better for this ... as an intro, summary, trailer for the book. Post it to an online video hosting, and send it to review folks as a teaser. * Get to conventions, any conventions (when they start again) and get a small booth? * If you know YouTube magic content creators, offer your book to them as a prize for giveaways ... several copies even better. Prime the pump. * See if the booksellers will let you do a "countdown" or limited time only sale when you get ready for markdowns. * Find an interesting few items to create "Magic Bundles". Maybe some specific props involved, specialty deck, a premium themed deck. And advertiser at magic shops ... "Act now and get free package of sponge balls/4 Clad Kennedy Half Dollars/nut & bolt" Their are amazingly generous and supportive magicians here and other forums. It could be worth sending a direct message to some of the reputable review writers you know of and ask if you can send them a complimentary review copy in exchange for an honest review. Few things are as powerful for a new face as getting a trusted voice to say, "sure, try it." Even some magic shops have social Media presence where they do reviews. Cold messaging is tough to get noticed, but getting in the game, and succeeding, is about will and tenacity. Just like getting the first few gigs.

Hello Neophyte, I think you have already gotten off to a great start. Building mystery & intrigue as to your identity and the books you wrote, generates curiosity. I would say try to spread your wings and continue to build upon the mystique you have created, here.
You mentioned that you are located in the U.K. I know that Craig Petty has a youtube channel where he currently does reviews, rants, gives advice etc. He has quite a large following, so I would suggest that you contact Craig and see if he could help you out. The larger the audience, the better chance at breaking out of the pack! Best Magical Regards, Mark Williams
