Hello all!
Martin Nash's Title Bout routine. I've shown this to a few friends and co-workers and I've gotten good reactions from it however, everyone only comments on the Jacks changing into fours. The Triumph ending gets zero reaction so, I've decided to omit that ending. It almost seems as the Triumph ending in this routine is ant-climactic or just doesn't meet up to the four card transformation. Does anyone perform this effect with the Triumph ending? If so, what kind of reactions do you get compared to the transformation of the four cards? Thanks!

If I recall correctly this version with the Triumph was added on by Michael Ammar in his “Easy to Master“ series. The original version in Martin‘s book (Ever So Sleightly?)
did not have this Feature. You are correct in removing it. No disrespected intended, but it was one of those things where you add it on because you can. |

Some purists have argued that combining classic effects is a bad idea -- there's a conversation about this on Vernon's Revelations set where the question comes up about whether something like Card To Wallet should be combined with The Travellers. The conversation seemed to skew against the idea, but then again, Vernon's Cups and Balls was also talked about, and as good as his routining of the trick is, we're still talking about an effect where most people are really only going to remember the fruit.
I'm agnostic on that specific issue, but it is important when combining effects to understand the risk that one may steal the thunder from the other one. If you hold the Triumph effect in high regard and you want to get a good reaction from it, then you might want to do it on its own, and opt for a more traditional Matching The Cards trick. That said, if you look at something like David Williamson's Colour Changing Deck, he essentially uses aspects of the Triumph effect in order to initially better sell the colour of the backs. What that means in this case is that if the original face-up-into-face-down shuffle puts you in a situation to better sell the Matching The Cards plot, you may want to keep it. You could potentially change the moment of the reveal to get some oomph out of it, either by doing it before the reveal of the 4-of-a-kind climax, or doing it way after, perhaps by handing the deck off to the spectator once the four cards have been produced (ostensibly so you're committed to the cards you've got). Then, when the effect is over and has been properly received, you can ask the spectator to fix the cards for you, before remarking "Oh! You already did! Thanks!" This is all conjecture, of course, but it's maybe an option. Sometimes the problem with combining effects is that we go Bam-Bam-Bam in revealing them, and what we gain with impact we lose with clarity.

Burnaby, you raise a good point. I also think that if the additional climax or kicker enhances the overall effect than by all means, do it. But I think in the case of the Ammar taught version of Nash’s Title Bout from ETMCM , the Triumph ending does not enhance the overall effect. Just my opinion of course.
