I just watched the latest Penguin Live with Gozner where he taught the spin change. Such a beautiful move. I wanted to talk about the routine.
I love the routine, but I was thinking about a slight change: He starts the routine by pulling out a prediction. He then asks Dan to name any card, and he looks in the deck, cuts it a few times, and then shows that the prediction card doesn't match Dan's named card. He then does the spin change, changing the card into Dan's card. The problem I have with this is that in cutting the deck, it is obvious that he is pulling out the right card. The only thing that is a mystery is how the wrong prediction changes to the right card. That is a great trick, but I'm thinking it could be even better. It seems to me that if instead of pulling out a card as a prediction, if he were to shuffle the cards and pull out any card at random that nobody has seen, then ask someone to use their psychic skills to name the card. He would then have more reason to go through the deck to see if their thought of card is in the deck as buildup to the reveal. If he goes through and cuts as he goes along, as if he is just making it more convenient for him to hold the cards, he can more convincingly say he didn't find it. Then, show the wrong card, followed by the spin change. I think this handling would be better theatrics. It creates more genuine highs and lows, as well as humorous moments. Personally, I would pick a wife, with the husband in the audience and turn it into a humorous interchange between husband and wife, where the wife and I try to convince the husband that the wife is never wrong by pretending that she said the "other" card all along, then when he insists it was a different card, tell him that he is just seeing thing and do the change after asking him, what was the card she originally said again? If you haven't seen this lecture, it is really good, you might want to watch it, and then, please, give me your input on this topic. Thanks. KJ |

Also, if Gozner see's this thread, I would love to hear your views on this slight modification. Of course, each performer has their own style. My style is I try to create some theatrical drama. I like highs, lows, laughs, tears, a lot of interaction between audience members, etc.

Dear 1KJ,
First of all, thanks for taking the time to write a review of my lecture. I couldn't be more agree with you. The intention was to show a simple idea of how to incorporate the spin change into any trick and not to go too deep in the routine itself, however, your ideas are truly appreciated. Please feel free to reach out to me at "mago at gozner dot com" Best regards |
