Hello Michael, I watched the first routine and the last one you posted. I liked both as a Homage for David Roth, while I did not know him, beyond books and videos, I am sure the people that knew him better enjoyed your routine more.

There are several parts of it that I liked a lot as a spectator, great magic.

However I think that as a routine for others (non magicians that could appreciate sleight and Roth's style), it is too long, 6 min of coin magic at the end gets repetitive (just my opinion as a spectator of magic).

Nevertheless I appreciate how much your friendship with David Roth helped create this routine

Thank you for sharing

Hi Pabloinus, and thank you for posting. There are different types of coin tricks and each fills a different "niche". For walk around or as a trick for a friend, a quickie works best. No show, gets right to the point, perfect for those times when you know there is a short attention span. Get in, and get out. Then, there are the tricks of intermediate length. They can be used for several types of venues. For example, a coins across can last for a minute, or up to 3 minutes (if you are doing a full routine like MIGRATE). The time of the routine varies again with your impression of what the audience attention will be, and thus what you need to do.
Then there are the showpieces, that last longer. They are "meaty", and designed for a formal show. In a formal show your audience is usually sitting and relaxed, and prepared to watch a longer routine (unlike other venues). Anything using props will make the magic more interesting, and can make the magic last longer if you so choose (and of course there are props that are used in quickies, but the props make the magic more interesting). Roth had an entire sit down show done with props. Of course he did sets just showing the hard core coin magic as well, such as the Penn and Teller spot that used only a coffee cup and a chopstick (and his secret accessory!). My own 20 minute show, performed at the Castle, was all coin related, had some props, and used comedy to extend the magic. I did 5 routines in 20 minutes.
So back to this. This was constructed for a formal show. In my opinion, the props make it interesting, and bind a sequence of effects together. It is actually 4 tricks presented almost as its own set. The vanishes, the flurry, spellbound, and the transposition, all with the binding theme of the purse and hand. Each sequence finishes with a tie-in to the original theme. Still tweaking the routine, but I am looking forward to performing it to close my act the next time I get out to the West Coast to perform at the Castle.

Thank you Michael for your detailed explanation and rationale, I am sure you are correct and the routine will work as expected.

Again I appreciate you took the time to show it to us and to answer this post

For those who have followed, here is an update to my routine. I edited my patter to reduce the time to 5:49 (making it really tight), and worked on removing any "tells". I had forgotten how open Stealth Palm can be, and had to regain the confidence to use it as I had originally intended. In a few days I will once again remove this, but wanted to show those interested how this has progressed. Enjoy!

I do see some Roth-esque rhythm developing there, indeed, Michael. Smile

Thanks Laurie! I was very happy with how magical this is turning out. I was able to edit without removing any of the Roth "bits" as well. It still needs a bit more work, but I feel I can finally perform it as is.

I deleted the prior handling because it is a constant work in progress and I have once again updated the handling. Rather than post updated versions here, I will just post it on my YouTube channel Rubinstein Coin Magic. I changed a spellbound sequence and tightened the script a tad more, and feel it is finally ready. I should be able to film later today or tomorrow, so keep an eye out. Thanks for your continued interest and feedback. I would say that it is the most difficult routine I have developed (so many little nuances not noticible but important to remember) and has taken months to get it to the point where everything flows so well. This will be my closing number for the next time I perform at the Castle (and maybe on TV).

I decided to post the link to my updated handling one more time, since someone asked me to also post it here. I will keep up this version unless I again tweak it some more, but I think it is finally ready. I changed the spellbound handling a bit, as I feel it is a bit more illusive like this. Hope you enjoy it!

What a wonderful routine which while using Roth "bits" is still clearly a Rubinstein work of the first order, Bravo!! Thank you!

Thanks Doug and Kenno! Although this is a rather complex routine, I may put it out as a booklet or download down the line. For now, it will be the closing number of my new act.

For those who have been following, this is likely the final iteration of my routine, The Other Hand, after months of tweaking the patter and hand movements. At this point I don't feel that cutting the patter any further would be contructive. I think Stealth palm (Rubinstein Coin Magic) looks very natural here, and the laymen I have shown this to were totally fooled.
For those seeing this for the first time, it is a routine developed to honor my friend David Roth. It combines his use of props, and some of his most iconic lines together with my own style and techniques. Enjoy!
