Is Tommy Wonder's Books of Wonder of use to someone interested ONLY in cards?

The Books of Wonder are useful to all magicians but if you are only looking for card tricks you will probably be disappointed.

Why? Foolishly, after ordering the books I read that there is much content devoted to props that must either be bought or self-made. This kind of stuff leaves me cold.

If he gets The Books of Wonder he will definitely benefit and I would always recommend them but there are only about 15 or so card tricks in the two volume set. It sounds to me like he's looking for card effects so he'd probably enjoy a book like Close Up Card Magic or The Classic Magic of Larry Jennings more.

You are correct Frank. I was swayed by what I had read--I am quite naive in that way.

Do they go into the philosophy of the misdirection and timing aspects of things? Kind of like Eugene Burger writtings? I held off on getting them since I seen the TOC listing card tricks and have not spoke to anyone that has these books.

The Books of Wonder are, well Wonderful. But they are not beginners books at all. They do have a fair bit of card magic, but that's definitely not the focus. Really you don't get these books to learn tricks, you get it to learn insights into how one of the world's great magicians thought, how and why he assembled a routine etc. Only a few of these pieces are within the range of even an advanced performer--not so much because of advanced sleight of hand, but because of the level of showmanship and attention of detail and his own personality that goes into them.
But when you're ready, these books will take your magic up a few notches... -Rob |
